Where can I get the slotted cable end for the brake/clutch levers? Walridge has some but they are 0.53" long which would stick way out on my levers. Mine is 7/16" or about 0.45" long and 3/8" diameter. I don't seem to be able to find them on any sites, maybe if I call Ella?

Couldn't find it on flanders.com, they had some HD slotted ones, but they were 1/2" long and wrong diameter. The only one that was close was not slotted.

I have the round, slotted, adjuster nuts (NOS, Doherty) but the cable ends are apparently made of Unobtanium.

Dave, why not just buy the ones that are too long and grind the underside down to the thickness you want. You won't see the grind marks on the underside and the top will still look nice.

They don't have to be slotted

How can I get the cable end on if it is not slotted?

Don't want the longer ones because the slot is centered, and I would have to grind off both ends so one side would not stick out. I could do both ends and plate it myself, but I would rather just buy the correct parts. I may have to resort to some custom job, not unusual, maybe I could get ludwig to make them for me, he seems to be able to make everything. I wouldn't go here but I have apparently lost one and if I get one, I might as well get 2. I can't believe these things are not available. I'll call Ella on Monday.

Of course, how else am I going to find it?

Dave,
if I understand correctly you need a cable ferrule or barrel correct?
Barnett cables and clutches in Maryland made me all new cables from originals supplied by me.
I got tired of getting the wrong lengths from suppliers.
They know what works and can send you the ferrules for clutch and front brake perches.
Google Barnett cables.
They made mine from in house components from scratch.
These cables will be the last set I will need in this life time.
Superior leaps and bounds over orig. material cables.
Clutch cable came w/ correct ferrule this why I offered up this idea.

Marshal, I order all of my cables through barnett as well and just figured there is a personal reason for needing the ends seperate. I also forget most people are more particular to appearances when restoring a bike. I just like to ride mine with a semi clean look.......I take that back I don't really care about clean or correct just rideable. :)

Most of my brake and clutch cables have a squat, barrel-shaped end soldered on the end of the cable and this sits inside the larger end that you show that then sits in the lever. In the larger end, there is a hole through it that is reamed out larger on one side for the barrel but no slot. Of course this means that the larger end needs to go on the cable first and then the smaller end gets soldered to the cable. Unfortunately, this doesn't solve your immediate problem as it means that you need to make a new cable! It sounds like the parts I describe are the only ones available now. Barnett cables are excellent if you have to go that route or you can learn to make your own with parts from Flanders.

Have you tried Domiracer? They may have the slotted type.

TPeever,
the orig. configured cables had the barrel shaped ferrules permenately attached to the cable end at the bars.
I guess they figured if you dropped the ferrule in the weeds on the side of the road you were outta luck.
Barnett sends them along w/ the new cable(s).
Dave should be able to order a pair so they match port and starboard and still be under a buck less shipping
of course.
They know what you need.
There are apparently slightly different lengths of cables utilizied on the commandos through out production.
Most vendors offer the generic MKIII stuff as more common.
Need an earlier cable you better know the length.
Ask me how I know this after returning 3 clutch cables to 3 differnt vendors.

Yep, exactly. There are cables of different length for the different types of handlebars. Plus a fair bit of variation among vendors as several folks have discovered. I have bought several different cables for different bike projects that didn't fit or were of poor quality. Part of the reason I started making my own!!

Last time I checked, MAP Cycle in Florida had a nice cable section on their online catalog where they listed the exact lengths of cables. Most vendors do not provide this much detail so it's harder to match cables by length.

I think rather than wasting everyone and my time playing around on the keyboard, by this time I could have cut a slot with a hack saw in the one I got by mistake from Walridge, re-drilled it and plated it and be on my way. Think I will do that this afternoon and be done with it. Thanks for everyone's suggestions.

Ha. About 20 minuets with the hack saw, file and drill and I have a new cable end. Polished and tried to plate, but the electro nickel plate doesn't seem to want to attach to brass or bronze whatever they are. I have noticed it won't plate brazing either. Anyhow, polish them up real good with white compound and they are so shiny they almost look chrome.

Very nice adapt and overcome.
My former employer(USMC) drummed that same thinking in our heads.
Gald you have the means to do such.
That bike looks nice.
