Hi, I've recently posted about issues I'm having with my newly installed LED Headlamp bulb that doesn't work in the correct sequence with the headlamp warning light.
I've been advised i need to run the wiring through a change over relay. Could anyone give me advice on what relay i need to fit into a commando headlight and any advice on how to wire this up would be appreciated.
Thanks for any help.

I thought the relay was only needed when swapping the indicators over to LEDs?

I could be wrong of course.

Just for reference, I've run an LED headlight, BPF format on my +ve Earth MKII for some yrs now. It was purchased from Classic Dynamo Conversions in the UK. Bulb is basically identical to what I've seen from PG although his are likely later versions. I do run an LED highbeam warning lamp, which is polarity insensitive. I found the incandescent warning lamp would still come on with low beams, as there must be a small amount of current bleed through from the headlight circuit.

For what purpose? I can't think how a changeover relay could fix the high beam warning lamp problem.

A changeover relay (5-pin with 87 and 87a terminals)

The reason I asked is that there seem to be a few having issues with those. I’m not yet aware of folk having issues with the H4 (3 pin) type, so IMHO given the ubiquitous nature of H4 bulbs, changing to a H4 compatible lens and using a H4 replacement LED is far more preferable to modifying the wiring with change over relays etc. You’ll get a better light too.

I agree that the H4 swap is well worth it plus there are now H4 LED bulbs that work fine with positive ground, I went that route and everything works right including the indicator bulb.

I have BPF LED in a 74 850 + ground which I picked up about 5 years ago. It operates backward. With the switch on low beam the headlight is on high ( both sides of the bulb lighting) and no high beam indicator light. Switch to high beam, headlight is low (one side of the bulb lighting) with high beam indicator on. Works normally with the incandescent bulb. The bulb only fits one way. If I swap the leads in the headlight, I get high beam with no indicator light on low switch and no light with indicator on. The bulb is wired backward but circuitry in it doesn't allow a wire swap. I've learned to live with it.

Check the wiring all the way back to the switch. When I was trouble shooting I found the blue/white and blue red swapped in a triple connector under the tank which confused things more.

I recently put an Auxito H4 Led in my 78 Kawi. Wow! Incredible improvement and half the power draw.
