Leaking sump plate

2015 961 Cafe Racer. I had an oil mist on my sump plate which left a small drip after I parked after a run. I put an eighth of a turn on all 6 screws, just to hand tight, but it’s still leaking. It looks like I can just remove the six screws, after draining the oil, clean up the gasket face and reinstall.

But I am suspicious of anything that sounds straight forward, nothing is going to drop out is it?

I am going to have to remove silencers and Y pipe to get at it.

Normally nothing will drop out. If it does, its not a good thing.

You have nothing to worry about. Take off the plate, clean, hone faces, reinstall.

There ought to be 8 screws in your sump plate!
When you clean the faces up, ditch the gasket in favour of some decent quality RTV, that should work great.

Ahh 2 missing screws that explains the leak..

Actually just a brain fart, there are 8 and a pain to access. Thanks for the rtv suggestion.

Do NOT overfill the gearbox/primary . 1.2 L of oil is all that is needed in there. Overfilling the gearbox will cause countershaft seal area leaks while driving which will migrate down to the sump plate area . The oil will collect on the sump plate and make you think that the sump plate is leaking. Just a reminder. Ask me how I know.

How do you know?

At the 2000 mile Deals Gap proving grounds ! I did it ! I saw it , I lived it ! And after all the leaking stopped I had 1.2 L of oil in my trans/primary. The fill to spill hole can put in too much . I believe 1 L poses NO lubrication issues . It is easy to overfill is my point. Bike must be perfecly level both fore and aft , and left to right to use fill to spill. And even then too much can go in. Now I just put in a measured 1.2 L. :)

I did fill exactly 1.2 litres on last oil change, but after each 200 to 300 miles have to refill about 1-2dl of oil to top up to the fill to spill hole. I don’t know if oil will stay level without refills when I let it go down to 1 litre.
May be it is worth a try... ?

Skidmark, c’mon dude... a drop of oil under your Norton... that just proves it’s REAL !!

I might slacken off some of my sump screws to try and get that authenticity too...

Just saying that when I fill to spill I am putting in more than 1.2 L . Are you losing oil when you drive it ?

Put in only 1.2 L , do not fill to spill , This may be too much like my bike.

Bought my Sport with 259 miles on the clock and the counter shaft seal was already leaking. Ordered seals and supplies from AF1 today. When I changed the oil I left the fill plug out until oil stopped dripping out thinking that would prevent overfill. Didn't think it was much more that liter to fill but I was working with a four liter jug. Using liter bottle when I complete the seal changeout.

Keep in mind what Tony is saying. Level plug is inaccurate.

Has similar following TSB14 installation which required the sump plate removal. the factory no longer provide gaskets for the plate as it is 'glued on' I had my local dealer do the job as I didn't feel the 2 part compound used was a DIY job. No leaks ( from there ) since. Happy days :)

I notice a little weeping around my plate while installing a decat. Retorqued the screws and all good so far.
