Leak Down Test (Don't Laugh!!)

Cliffs,

Sorta like a Dremel, but I use Dremel accessories. I used doubled up discs that I ran up against a piece of steel to get the approximate diameter. Then carefully cut into the bowl. I’m honestly not sure if that mod really matters with twin carbs, I was hunting another problem and just tried it to see what would happen. As discussed here before different size needle valves are an option if you think you need more flow. Just read up on installed depth of valve if using Stay-ups.
Pete

Thanks for the info Pete. You did a nice job!

From a performance perspective I think it's only noticeable at sustained wide open throttle. When I was setting my float heights last year I noticed the needle jiggling around as the bowl filled, and the petrol was spurting out over the gasket height, so in my mind it must cause the gasket to get wetter then it needs to be. So for me it was purely as a design improvement. I guess even a hole drilled below the top would do the same job.

Cheers,

Cliff.

Extra fuel slot don't matter a whitworth unless sustaining hi throttle, (not necessarily even WOT) to climb long steeps illegally fast or catch up to traffic on freeways/turnpikes, may loose power heating up going too lean. A Combat can have this happen after exceeding 100 for a mile or more.

Very nice hand craved slot, mine were done same way/tools but not so pretty. The fancy sportbikes squads usually run up to 115-120 max in Ozark opens - not much over a mile so long so Trixie Combat could hang with then to 115-ish, staying short of red zone, so didn't get far ahead not to be right back with on turns. The REAL challenge to hang with 120-180's hp bikes is being able to accelerate about as much as they did to pass cars in time or rushing back up to speed into opens. The slots in dual 32 Amals allowed it.

For something else to do while waiting on engine stuff, poke a big cherry red hot nail through Lockheed master cylinder rubber 'valve' restriction. Ya do have rear brake safety spring installed don't ya?

Here is a necessary mod for sustained WOT:

I always think of the Connemara as a chill-out drink, something to relax to, not going fast!

The 22 year old version is particularly nice, had a snifter years ago and can still remember how nice it was :)

This may be completely true, I just didn't figure out how to work that into the thread. What was actually going on here is I noticed there wasn't any in your garage photo and figured you needed to rectify that. It will make waiting for your parts to come back a lot more pleasant.

click, one thing that came to mind.

You mentioned you have Jims "Most Excellent" sump breather fitted. While you have the top end off, why not improve it's efficiency by plugging the timing cover breather holes, and drill the new oil level hole as discussed here...

As you have the drain out anyway, you should be able to flush the cases out to be sure there is no swarf within.

Cheers,

cliffa.

A little liquor is nice to enjoy but its still strong medicine that never tastes good by itself. Any comment on appreciating this or that flavor/smoothness really means the booze part was diluted &or foul oil byproducts absorbed out for a bit less bad tasting, sheeze. Beer is good but just don't mellow like a shot-cocktail-mixed girly drink, before full having to empty it soon. Men introduced me to all the above but its was women that taught me about wine and its lingering mood mellowing I can imbibe all night long.

Don't ever try the central american rum with a road kill snake in it. Label says "For Real Men Only". Display for conversation piece. I did it in two Belize locations, both times the tough big guys challenging me all almost immediate flew backwards to floor squirming or barely stayed upright bobbing head, holding throat or gut, spitting swearing tearing till too nauseous weak, collapsed on a table or into a chair. Hurt me similar but stayed on stool-stunned.

Thanks, I'll think about that one :)

I think I'll steer clear of the drink with the road kill snake in the bottle:rolleyes:

Regarding the taste of some 'hard' drink, the first glass tends to have the biggest 'kick' after that it's all downhill:p

Forgot to ask about this:

Red hot nail through lockheed master cylinder rubber, please explain?

I have a 75 MK3, there's already a return spring built into the rear brake pedal, I think you are referring to a cable operated rear brake?

Hi click, I think Mr. Hobot is talking about the old restrictor rubber built into the front brake master cylinder. Item 11 here...

https://andover-norton.co.uk/en/shop-drawing/77/handlebars-disc-brake-master-cylinder-and-hose-group

Do you have the old Norton Lockheed M/C ? if so has it been sleeved down to 13mm? if yes, then you probably don't have the restrictor anyway.

If you still have the 5/8' bore M/C it's well worth getting a sleeving kit as it will really improve the front brake (by 1970's standards) Don (AKA Maddass140) does a very good user friendly upgrade kit. Can't find his website at the mo, but you can PM him.

Cheers,

cliffa

I've read that Belize City is the most dangerous city on the planet. Now I know why !

I know what dead snakes in a puddle taste/smell like and that concentrated essence is delivered in spades by Viper Rum. I assume locals catch-kill em then let sun rain ripen before bottling.

Ciffa covered the restrictor relieving factoids - only applies to stock master cylinder as all upgrades all eliminate it, which don't make brake more powerful but does allow ALL pilot grip pressure to work caliper so tire grip only limiter.

Belieze city is maybe the worst there is and the gangs are better armed than most other places - with grenades and mines. Ya do not wonder around in city, straight from cab to store and right back, or gang on bicycles may bop ya steal ya and disperse. Tourist are mere side line entertainment, war with each neighood block gangs drug dealing is main bussiness. Ambergirs Key and deep Mt. jungle ruins/resorts is where I hung out. Btw SCUBA'd Blue Hole, 170 ft deep, below the 100 ft long stalagtites under the rim seen from air, that is a mere sky light hole in huge dome like cavern - bottomless for SCUBA to reach. I got nice nitrogen narcosis better than booze, and freaked out dive leader, but knew fish don't need to share air and no bends decompressing same time as others, nor on plane flight risk next day.

Hardest most improtant dangerous skill to practice is severe braking. I judge how good I might be on a given day by how scared or not I get trying to lock front ~50 mph, if can't bring myself to do it severely - better stay in sight seeing mode.

click I can't stand too much routine nor trying to settle things between business people but my wife would be a shoe in for the position but would have to pay a lot to entice away from our Ozark homestead paradise.
