Hi Guy's
I have fitted a layshaft roller bearing to my gearbox. the sleeve of the bearing that fits on to the layshaft is a loose fit! should this be loctited to prevent it from spinning on the shaft?

Brewer.

Hi Brewer,

Not good if its a loose fit. Not uncommon either. I recently fitted one and it was a firm fit, I was anticipating a loose one, would not heve been a surprise. If its loose, its got too much lateral slop which isn't good for the gear teeth alignment and stress on the shaft. Loctite make a range of specific bearing fit solutions. Call Statewide Bearings nearest to you in Bibra Lake on 9434 9555 for advice on the right Loctite product.

Is your original bearing a loose fit?
If you use loctite, you might have trouble assembling the gearbox.

Couldn't he just install the outer race/bearing, loctite the inner race to the layshaft, and install the inner race/layshaft as one? Don't see why that would be a problem.

The inner roller race should have a single lip? So that part is normally fitted onto the layshaft with the lip side against top gear, and the other part of the bearing is fitted into the case, so there's no problem.

What type of loctite is recomended for securing the inner race bearing to layshaft.

Do the inner cover and outer cover kickstart bushes need to be a snugg fit in there aluminium cases also. these Bush's were loose and are free to rotate internal and externallly on my 1973 MkII gearbox. there was so much lateral movement in my layshaft when all these dificiencies were combined. no wonder she was jumping out of first gear when I gave her a "bootful" in First!!!!! should these kickstart bush's be loctited on their external diameter if there is exsssesive play????

Yes, that seems very common, I have had to loctite both of mine back in,they wern't sloppy just spinning in the cases.SO it will be loctite all around ,new first gear bush, and set the end float to about 0.010'' and it should be good.I have been using 620.

Ah, a split roller, no you woudn't have trouble assembling.
I have replaced my roller bearing, as the inner race was knackered, with a special ball race from Mick Hemmings, as that is what he recommends. It has a deeper seating & the layshaft flexes.
The roller was loose in the casing, so I put the outer race in surrounded by a thou shim, as I do not like loctite.
The new bearing was alright.
I have had a bearing go , in the 70's. Two up at 70mph, the back wheel locks up & you can't do anything about it.
Broke the main casing & bent the layshft.

Christ, I've got a spare gearbox bought on eBay that I completely rebuilt, sitting on a shelf. And in the bike I ride? Unknown components. And on the shelf, next to the newly rebuilt gearbox? A complete set of bearings, bushings, seals, springs, and gaskets to do the box in the bike.

So if I die riding the Commando because the gearbox locks up at speed, would you please tell my wife I MEANT TO GET TO IT!

Seriously, as soon as winter sets in and the winter bike comes out, gearbox rebuild, new rings, and the automatic tensioner. This year, for sure!

He told himself....

I also use the 'Mick Hemmings' ball bearing.

Thanks for all advice.
I used loctite 610 to secure the layshaft inner sleeve to the shaft an used it to secure kickstart bush's 2 off!
I also replaced the gear bronze bushes on 3rd lay and 2nd mainshaft, and got the bush inserted on 1st gear layshaft ..... then machined bush to suit the shaft! All other roller and ball bearings were good.
I also replaced and reset the hairpin as per the instructions that were in a tech article I read- the link for that article was here somewhere on this forum!

Last night I took her for a spin and the box feels great!!!! Now she selects gears so much better, with no slipping out of First gear whatsoever.

Thanks guys

Brewer.
