What kind of puller works good on removing Layshafts?

Is the only option to weld a slide hammer to the end of the layshaft?

Have tried lots of 1500W heat until the oil sizzles, still stuck.

Will try vice grips held firmly to layshaft via tape to avoid scratching the surface.

Would be easier with the correct tool.

You really shouldn't need any kind of puller to remove the layshaft (with bearing).

Use more heat as you obviously aren't getting the alloy case hot enough to release the steel bearing which it must do as alloy expands at a faster rate than steel. A gas torch is better than a heat gun. If possible, apply the heat/flame to the outside of the case in the area directly behind the bearing as that is more effective.
 
Is your tranny off the bike? If so, you could try freezing the whole thing before you heat the case up.
 
Did you remove the fork selector shaft before?
I could geht out mine simply by pulling by hand without using force.
 
Trans is still in bike. Primary still on. I will try the gun outside the case from the front and back. I think its already getting plenty hot if oil is sizzling. A tap on a vice grip clamped on might work next. Got a blister burn pulling on the shaft with a leather glove so i know it is getting hot!

Possibly, as long as the bearing comes out with the shaft! If it doesn't, then you end up with another problem as you still have to remove the bearing (assuming that's the reason you are doing this?) so ideally, you want the bearing to come out with the shaft and the case has to be re-heated so the new bearing "drops" into place without having to drive it home.

Not necessarily a bad thing as a tight fitting bearing is better than a loose one because a loose bearing will spin in the case, but if it's still a 6203 steel or brass cage ball bearing then it really needs to be replaced with the NJ203 roller or 'Hemmings' ball bearing upgrade because the standard bearing can disintegrate with little or no warning!
 
May be time to consider removing the G/B from the cradle. If you get to that stage, clean it with decreasing levels of VOC products, when you get to household dish detergent you are ready to put in a cold oven, set the temp to about 325 (F) fire the oven, open a beer, when you about to finish your second brew, you will hear the layshaft fall out with the bearing. Do not quench the gear case, let it cool slowly.

A bearing puller, or, if you're lucky, a pair of screw drivers will remove with the bearing.
 
Borrowed a big dent puller with a hook. Will use that with vice grips clamped onto the shaft via some aluminum or thick gaffers tape. Should work OK.

Where is the best place to heat the case? Will try from the outside, under the centerstand.
 
I heated from the inside with a propane torch. Doesn't take much, just get spit to boil. Of course heat the case, not the brg.

Worked perfect with a little heat, then vice grip on shaft with a slide hammer. Shaft came out first. Then, reinserted into bearing and tried again.
The key is to pull out straight and hard. I would say a slide hammer is an essential tool for this job. Once I get this transmission back together, have 2 more transmissions to do, will use this same way.
 
Hi Chris.
If you have the gearbox a part, if you pull the SLEEVE GEAR of the mains haft, the lay shaft will come out.

It sounds like your bearing was installed with sleeve retainer locktite or perhaps red locktite.
 
Came out easy after some heat and light tap with a slide hammer. Found a standard cheap SKF 6203 bearing inside…….anyone have any luck running these?

I replaced with a Hemmings FAG bearing for good measure.

SKF will go to the trash.

Yes, YOU did :) as it hadn't broken up, locked up your gearbox and rear wheel and thrown you off the bike as any metal cage 6203 bearing could potentially do! :wink:

Anyone who still has a steel or brass cage 6203 layshaft bearing in their Commando's gearbox is running on luck!
