The roller ball bearing has a lip on one side of the inner race - does that side face IN (to the bearing hole) or OUT (towards the gears)? Thanks

If you put the step out you will need a very large hammer to smash the lip past the rollers  , in against the gears.

Brian your in and my in are opposite, the step goes against 4th gear so the lay shaft can slip into the bearing and the the step should stop it slipping any futher.Old britt web site has a well worth while gearbox rebuild explaination.

The irony is I have Fred's instructions and am following them. I couldn't find this little snippet of info though. Thanks again
