Killing the bike that killed mine

If I ever got a ride on a Mick Doohan full lead 115Kg 200hp screamer NSR , I would not give any thought to much else but moving onward...sensible to the rush...oh yeah...

750/4s? Hey, if you want, like, or love them...go for it, but dont try & spin them up for being anything more than an a souless appliance...
For all the known faults, frustrations & foibles of machines wih real character, also comes reward & satisfaction, which with unpleasant subjective
riding feel included, the 750/4 cant provide...

these are all appliances, the norton included. none of these things actually have a "soul", you take out what you put in. If all you put into the honda is hate, all you will get out is indifference. Want a Sock-4 to have "character"? don't maintain it for a year and continue to ride it. You'll get all sorts of "character" by the end of that year. If you go to one bike carrying the expectations of another largely you will just be disappointed. A SOHC isn't a norton, or a ducati, or guzzi - it's its own thing and some people get it and some people don't. You are putting too much "poetry" in the wrong place.

No way man, it may be true that all bikes are on a continuum, from boring to mindblowing, I get that CB 750/4s are what they are (boring), so l ride an RZ 350 to work, & a big Kaw triple for fun. So a Commando is next on my list, but never that Honda.

You mean after all of this smoke you've been blowing, you don't even own a Norton?

The way to go period 4 historic racing in Victoria,OZ is to buy a TRex Honda CB750 (1100cc). They are extremely fast down the straights, not s o good in the corners , but 'big is better' ? If I was ever thinking of doing that I would buy a Yamaha R1 and go racing moderns. I feel the same wa y bout manx Nortons which have 18 inch wheels , and the steering altered to make them handle like a Suzuki two stroke. When people do that I feel they have lost the plot. I've seen quite a few moderns racing in recent years. It is a ll R6, and R1 Yamahas and Fireblades in the fast classes . The other classes are a deadly mix of idiocy in order to scrape up a few more entries. It doesn't achieve that anyway - the racing is shit-house and the numbers are down - and that is right throughout all forms of road racing in Australia. Four cylinder motorcycles are a great innovation for road use, but for racing, even two strokes are better. The only type of bike that I really like to see race are 'thunderbikes' which have two valves per cylinder air cooled motors of less than four cylinders. I feel there s hould be special championship races for that t ype of bike, run in capacity classes and heats.
It did my heart good to see this Ducati racing a few weeks ago. I would never own one, but I got the adrenalin rush by just watching it race:

The rest of the bikes in the race were just more four cylinder garbage - completely uninteresting - in fact boring !

Even this is better ! :

If you want to race four cylinder motorcycles Unless you've got an MV GP bike, you hould buy a table tennis bat, and compete with that. It would be much cheaper, and probably more inspiring.

Either of you laughing boys got a 961?
There are quite a few bikes I would like to have, but not a CB 750.

Personally, I think we've had enough of this. It's really not going anywhere concerning Norton.

Gday acotrel, the best item to come out of this thread was the posting of your brothers JAP build. Absolutely an awsome looking piece of machinery! I was wondering if you could post more pics along with specs etc? Another thread in anything else motorcycle related is the ideal spot!!! (I hope thats not toooooo pushy?)
I have posted some pics here some where before of an Adelaide crew thats making new JAP motors. Is this one of them?

"Blah blah blah" ....you guys have got the CB 750 sound, down pat...L.O.L.

The motor is not a replica , it is the genuine item. The bike was originally from Victoria, but was raced for many years in South Australia. The South Australian replica motors differ a bit in detail, but seem to be very good. I believe there are two other genuine 880 JAP sidecars around. One of them has been decorated so much that it looks silly. Unfortunately, it was the best of them - now in the wrong hands.
The person making 880 JAP motors in SA is Gary Summerton.

Better than pics ! :

^ I think everyone is just tired of responding to J.A.W.'s trolling.
I know that I am!

Decidedly . A superiority complex and a bit of a alcohol problem , was the discription of his only comrade Id met that was actually capeable of rationality .
Had thought it was our olde friend carbon fibre . Perhaps we should put them in touch so they can hold hands .

im glad to know that Kawaski H2 750 Frames dont flex. And that theyre so fast in LC Yam Frames . Haveing riden it , or both here , briefly .
750 wasnt as painfull as 350 . In NZ opening up with rpms in powerband , was not overwhelmed . in fact thought 2/3 of Commando powerband .

Sorry .

Many thanks acotrel for the information etc!! I cant help but love them ol'JAP motors and that outfit is spectacular to say the least! Great to watch/hear the bike in action but also inspiring is Doug and John still enjoying the adrenalin rush! Hats of to them for the job done. You gotta love John's strong ozzie accent! Once again thanks for posting and as you said about the links,"better than pics"!!

Foxy, I'm really glad you liked the video clips. The 880 JAP is really beautiful, and now that we've fixed the oiling problems, the cracked flywheel, and the stripped thread in the head, we've got it under control. My brother believes it will probably perform better than the Vincents. I'm going to try and get some on-board video when we get it out next time, and I will post the link on this forum. It should be a real hoot - my brother usually wins the races he enters. Between the guys in the Historic Speedway Sidecars group, they own about six Vincents, and when the do 'demostrations' they actually race - it is much safer that way.
I hope I can inspire a bit of enthusiasm in you guys so you will build some lovely stuff yourselves. It is a really great hobby !
