Happy New Year guys, simple question ever since I owned my 74 Commando ( 20 odd years) I have never had the kickstart spring and ball fitted shown in the parts list.(06400 and 06399 referrred to as Kickstart Pedal Spring....)
So thought it was about time to fit it however on looking at my kickstart there is no where for it to go??? Ideas gratefully recieved.

I've been considering this update on a '73 850. It seems to me I would have to change both the kickstart shaft that attaches to the gearbox spline as well as the part referred to as the kickstart pedal pin. I would also need to purchase the ball and spring. That got a little pricey for me so unless I've missed something, I'll stay with my current set-up.

You can probably modify your kickstart to take the ball and spring, which would mean drilling a blind hole in the lever to house the ball and spring, and also another slightly smaller open hole in the pedal to act as the detent?

O/k, I give up. Is this a riddle?
Haven't got a clue what is being discussed here, just been through the 850 parts list & am still non the wiser.

The actual ball bearing nd spring aren't shown in the Andover pic, but they are in the Mk3 parts catalogue, page 8 parts 14 &15, they look as if they are fitted as as friction stop to prevent the foot pedal of the kickstart lever from moving about.
Just looked again, they ARE on L.A.B.'s last post.... magic!!!!

Super stuff chaps.
Mine tends to move a bit, just keep whacking it back with my foot & tightening it up now & again.
Folding kickstarts were a bit of a luxery

Same here been OK for 20 odd years so why change, just looking for an excuse to tinker with the bike I think...:)

Old Britts has a tech article on upgrading an earlier kick start lever to the MKIII ball and spring detent system. There's nothing but the ball and spring that have to be sourced.

Hey Ludwig, I remembered these shots and that's why I searched the thread. Thanks for re-posting!

Yes my avatar does resemble yours, you have great taste on colour for your bike! :)
I had a limited choice from about 5 old prints I had around here for my avatar (4 were the snow scene). Eventually I'll get up to the attic and dig out my old slides and see what's there for images.
