Note that I'm not using the factory acorn nut or wave washer. That being said how do the factory parts work?

In my case I can't tighten the acorn nut down as either the pedal won't move or the nut loosens each time you move the pedal. Right now I have the acorn nut in the perfect spot and the movement is perfect but I had to use loctite and hope the nut stays on this time.

I should have just got the AN parts and probably will the next time.

That is one annoying video. It never ends.....
I am pretty sure the original hardware was like in your video. Most of the later stuff has a ball detent.
Loctite seems like as good an idea as any.
You would turn the acorn nut thinner, so it bottomed before things got too tight.
Or you could get creative and encapsulated a spring and ball in the pedal.
Let's face it, it's a crap design.

The stock set up would have the wave washer below the kick pedal with a plain washer below the top nut.
That looks quite tall in assembled height.

Loctite is as good as anything or a small alloy gubbin in the dome nut as a compressible to height/locking adjuster.

I think this wave washer is a lot thicker than the factory part. The parts book says a domed washer so I don't think I have it right. I'll replace it with the correct parts.

This is the cupped washer that goes under the kick pedal pivot.
It still needs top shimming to get it to work with a nice action, not to tight but not to loose, it might have been fine back in the 1970's when all new.
No detent on this one (Mk2a) so the stiction is important.
It needs some attention at the top washer area.

Kickstart Pedal Action

Actually since I have a MkIII kickstarter I need to look at the right parts. Pedal, flat washer, dished washer, acorn nut. I don't like how thick this wave washer is.

Its the same part, 0.050" high before any compression.
The Mk111 version does not seem like an improvement even with the detent addition, the previous simple version works fine when the compression is right.

Is that based on observer experience?

I will say yes, when the spring cup is in fine fettle, the simple arrangement works well, pull the kicker out, stow it after ignition and it will stay put if the drag is sufficient.

The catch, I regard it like some other items (cush drive rubbers etc) the cup is around $1.50 so buy half a dozen, buy two sets of cush rubbers.
The cup will loose it spring some time in the future but a spare could be installed on the side of the road.
With the detent it should be better but do not have that version so would not know.

The one I have with a new cup is much more firm to push than your video (seems) shows.
The kick start lever needs to be 100%.

Dave,
Can you fit a washer or two on the very end of the kicker shaft, that will fit in the acorn nut bore. This way when you tighten the acorn nut it will press against the washer. Basically you will be making the shaft slightly longer.

The detent version is quite lovely. In the video it’s the detent doing most of the work. I have an earlier kicker on my other bike and I don’t like it at all.

I was thinking of something like that, just shove a spacer inside the acorn.
