Hi, I decided to remove my kick stand on my 74, Because it likes to disappear under the bike sometimes.
It has a 7/16 / 20 us bolt in it.
There are fine threads in the bike side lug top weldment that the 7/16 passes through.
A , 1/2 /20 bolt will not fit! What size are these bolt & threads??
Thank You!
Bruce

A new factory bolt, bushing corrected mine. Works fine now. Doesn't disappear under the frame,

It is very annoying to find out the side stand weldment hole is bogered up. The tool steel hard bush and grade 8 hard bolt need to be scruplously maintained and kept tight. Soft mild steel bushes don't help much either. I have to repair one bike.
The "threads" are a sign of vibration damage from loose running.

Have a 71 frame that is bare but needs the pin removal upgrade operation too.

Loose side stand and kick starter bolt are a point of neglect having bad consequences.

.... and then there is the return spring falling off, as I was travelling to top of Norway, with stand graunching on the ground. Cable ties solved the noise... trouble is, they are still there, and that was August 2002.....!

Jim Comstock posted the cure on here for the bush wearing out
And that was a clip to retain and take the weight of the stand to stop the stand from bouncing and wearing the bush/side stand whilst riding

If it disappears under the muffler, you need to slide a piece of pipe over the end and gently bend it outward.

As above.

Probably the biggest enemy of any stand is the return spring itself which loads the pivot in the up position and quite often on an angle.

How many people are going to remove a side or centre/center stand once a year to lubricate any pivots when there is no easy way (from the factory way to do that) to do so, not many perhaps.
Besides some form of JC restraint it might be possible to grind/machine a small full circumference channel in the bush with some form of drilling at the upper part of the stand to feed it for once a year festivities in true Hobot fashion.

I use this on near all high load points, so pastefully molyfied it pays to not get it on your yourself as only scrubbing will almost remove it.

I have been looking at my main stand also and sure enough a very nice cradle but wear at its both the up and down main stand positions but no real surprise given the narrow load bearing surfaces.

Both the stops at the pivot and stand itself will wear out. I welded mine and ground them down to a tihgt fit. If there's a lot of play up and down, the surfaces where pivot and stand meet can be welded up and ground back to a flat tight fit. The spring will eventually wear out in the frame hole and then will just fall off some time. If you find it back, you can try to bend a new hook, but as it's hardened spring steel, it might break.

I hit that with moly grease too...

Yes you have to grease up just about every exposed moving part regularly . All external greases dry out sooner or later, you don't want that. That's why the new car industry exists. I'ts work , maintenance regularly , which most do not have the time or inclination to do.
