Its about 15 c here today {60 F} I was going to go for a bit of a run. When I preceded to engage kicker it slipped and dropped down with a clunk. Oh oh. Tried a few times it was like a rachet ever so often it would catch to roll engine then slip off with a slight clunk. Dam! What the? So much for a fun run. After removing outer and inner cover I can see why. I have discovered kick start pawl is worn. Nice grove cut in pawl not enough left to fully engage gear. SOB pee on my party. I know I can still start bike without damage if I push start which is ok if I had to get home but to go out on a run in this condition aaaah I don't think so too many ifs, ands, and but's. Have owned bike since 1978 this is the first failure for the kick start pawl. Well I guess I can't complain got my moneys worth out of that sucker. Speaking of part is the kick start pawl available itself or do I need to purchase entire shaft and bush? Just wondering guess I will have to make a few calls.

Your right Lab good idea. This transmission has been rebuilt several times over the years and yet thats one area of the gearbox which has received little to no attention. Dang it rebuilt in 07 too kick my butt.

While you've got things apart don't forget to check the kickstart stub for end-play (should be minimal) and shim against the knuckle if needed
