I was wondering if anyone has tried to fit a kenda 130/70-18 as a rear for the 71-72 type frame

I'm running a 120/80-18 Avon RoadRider on my '72 and it just barely squeaks in there.

Thanks Batrider. Is that on a wm3/18 ? I bought a 100/90-19 for the front in a K-671 and now I can't find a 120 size in the K671 tread patern for the rear.

That is a wide one, will it fit? Its gonna be tight. It is also a low tyre. I can see why you want a low tyre as the wider it is the taller it is. 70 means the height of the tyre is 70% of the width, so it would be 91mm. A 100/90/19 would be 81mm tall. So on a 18" rim it would make the bike just slightly lower than a standard.
What width rim you thinking of putting it on?
A WM2 (standard) is good for a 100 tyre
a WM3 is good for a 110
A WM4 is good for a 120
It is a big mistake to put a wide tyre on a narrow rim....and I believe results in some of the poor handling complaints people make about wide tyres. Its not the width of the tyre, its the combination of wide tyre and narrow rim that you need to avoid.

thanks bigstu thought the 120 would fit the wm3 ,guess not, thanks. May just get another 100/90 19 for the rear.

Forgot to tell you, I run an Avon roadrider 110/80/18 on a wm3 rim on the rear, and a 100/90/19 With a WM2 rim on the front. Pretty good tyres, but the bike seems a bit 'lazy' with them. Not as good as the super venoms I had before, but the life is better.
I always heard 120 was about the limit....
CNW has used a 120 wide but recommended a WM4 or 4.5 rim, to me.

You can put a 120 on a wm3, you are only one size out. Avon made my recommendations to me.
I chose not to, as I had heard of handling problems.
If I had the 18 wm3 rim, I would put a 110/80-18 tyre on, or a 110/90-18. The 100 standard is SO thin.

They use Bridgestone Battlaxe 120 wide which is slightly narower than an Avon 120. I'm using a 120 wide Battlaxe on a WM4 and it fits just fine on my mkIII.

I have a 110/90 Avon on a 2.5 section (WM4 equivalent) on the rear. It spreads the tyre nicely. I have no inclination to go wider.

I read about this combination on a site .. cafe racer - something like that and that was their suggestion. I already have a 100/90-19 and they said it should be on a wm3 so I guess I need a wm3 and a wm4 for rear. Thanks for the input.

I have a 100/90 18 on a WM3 (2.15") on the front. This is a reduction in height compared with the old 4.10 x 19 but not too much less than the often-preferred 3.60 x 19 (90/90)

In the old AM20 range, a 90/90 19 has a diameter of 25.4"
100/90 18 25.1"
100/90 19 26.2"

Yep I'm running a WM-3 (2.15) Akront rim. It really should be a 110/80 or 90 tire with this size rim. I used to like the Pirelli Phantoms on them but it is becoming harder to find some of these tire sizes now.

I am now running 2.5 inch alloy rims in the standard 19 inch size. With Avon AM26 Roadriders in 100/90 x 19 this wider rim spreads the tyre by about half an inch over the standard 1.85" rims and offers a better profile. The bike feels more planted and there is slightly more rubber on the road at any lean angle. It was surprising that on the Avon website they recommend this tyre for the standard rims and then in the tyre specs say that the rim is best suited to a 2.5 inch rim with 2.75" and 2.15" being acceptable substitutes. The funny thing was that just by using the wider rim, Both tyres were too tight a fit. I had to replace the front mudguard mounting bolts with button headed capscrews and reverse the right rear lower shock bolt in order to slide the wheels in. If you look at a standard 1.85" rim with a tyre fitted you'll notice that because of the profile you could never use all the tread. You'd grind the end off the crankshaft before you used it all. With the tyre now spread over a wider profile, more of the tread is usable.
The use of wider tyres on too narrow a rim is a disaster.
The other advantage of using the same tyre front and rear is that as the back wears out, I fit the old front to the rear and put the new tyre on the front, ensuring good tyre life.
