Also I know some people don't like the K&N filters but I kinda do. I found the filter at a great price, maybe they'll have it in stock. Since it's K&N themselves there is a good chance.

K&N on Amazon

$30.39 & this item ships for FREE with Super Saver Shipping.

Less than some filters and I have the kit to clean and re-oil.

The K&N filter showed up. It was $30 with free shipping(!). This is less than the stock filter. This is less than someone on the forum was selling a used filter for. Needless to say I was pleased.

And I got some help filming. Well, for part of it. Enjoy.

It went in relatively smoothly considering I couldn't get to the timing side of the bike. I may have to tweak the bellows when I get around to that side, but it went ok. The putty knife was helpful.

Basically the air filter is good for a long, long while. Probably for longer than I'll be riding the bike. Bonus.

Impossible to replace the air filter from the primary side on an un-modified 72-74 bike. The ignition switch is in the way.

The factory pleated paper filter has a lot of surface area and they last a long time. I've replaced mine over the years only after being stupid enough to overfill the oil tank...

I recently bought one from Amazon too (after my paper Fram air filter burned up following a spitback from a carb) and it is working well so far, had to retune the idle but my bike runs and rides as well as ever. From what I've read here sounds like K&N running problems are more common with the smaller unit that clamps to the carbs. FWIW sprayed the carb boots with silicone lube before installing them and that made things waaay easier, was able to rotate them on the carbs and work the lip into the air cleaner plate and then rotate both so the flats lined up right.

I'm running rich now so I figure it's worse now. Going to throw the colortune on the next chance I get.

I've run K/N clamp on dual filter, the K/N round air box filter and the factory paper pleated filter. K/N's have less small particle filter ability than the paper kind so flow better but then don't protect like paper in gritty/dusty conditions as you came google the reasons fleets in dusty/gritty conditions don't use K/N anymore.
The clamp on K/N filters I've had needed hard shoving and some distorting to get to fit against frame members. Mine showed outside dust layer getting inside air box and carb throats so I added extra wrap of foam filter layer outside, until I saw the old school gritting wisdom of paper pleated. I don't like the look of raw air box backing plate left on un-used.

I used a K&N filter on my 97 Sub for years while on the east coast, not as much dirt as we get credit for. On a trip out west someone told me that was not a good idea as the K&N with it's larger air flow also allowed larger particals to pass through. Sure enough after laeving Utah I looked in the air tube, after the filter, and found the walls covered with fine sand. Thats when I bought a stock filter.

I live in serious dusty conditions till reaching pavement and above is exactly what I found with oiled K/N clamp on or air box installed filters. So if going for tarmac power I'd just put on air stacks, off road air stacks with foam over but not to live with long term no more.

I do it the opposite way and put the rubbers on the air cleaner plate first - - then the plate with rubbers onto the carbs, working from inside the rubbers. Then put the filter with perf ring in.

(It can be put on from the primary side by turning sideways. The ignition switch is just above it Just protect the nice aluminum primary cases from abrasion. Dunno but that method has always worked for me and hasn't been difficult.)

They may run rich until the excess K&N filter oil soaks away.

Thanx Russ I was wanting to try your way but didn't think I could keep it together fighting a first time new air filter insertion. I'm very pleased with my 3rd through filter bolt holding box bottom together. I used same soapy water mix I use to find tire leaks and fit tires. I put Trixie's on this week from a seat on DS by tipping fllter sideways to pass key stalk then uprighted and drew it back toward back plate.

Seems there are at least two styles of boots, one with carb side lips made for jubilee hose clamps and the last type I just installed just bellows curled end, no provision to clamp on, so had to zip tie around carb throat so zip tie wart keeps the boots from sliding up on slide tower, not clamping boot to throat. I found a tube nipple/condom to nicely cover the unused not recommended oil tank vent. Prior was standard hose with bolt plug.

Trixie's first new boots were put on in '06, with oiled proper K/N filter, she only got like 3000 miles d/t factory item let goes and deer strike, but boots were splitting-falling apart just sitting in shed covered. ugh. Same with fork gaiters.
One more time Trixie, then POW To The Moon with ya : (

Hobot, I’m sure you know, but some may not that Ralph Kramden, played by Jackie Gleason is talking to his stage wife, Alice Kramden played by Audrey Meadows. Trixie, played by Joyce Randolph, was the stage wife of “Ed” Norton, played by Art Carney.

Ed would never say “Pow, to the moon” to Trixie. Trixie ran the famly, period.

Trixie is on the far right. She is the only one of the "Honeymooners" cast still alive.

Ok Herman, caught me fudging characters I grew up with when no color TV or electronic ignitions available. Trixie was scratched on dog tag key fob on her.

Ridding season here is so gritty/dusty I may put a 1" foam wrap around the air box as well as breath through a face mask. If there is any visible smoke like remains in the air its still enough to scratch eye lens to blind tears. A fella took a newly repaired 3 wheeler out of shop in summer for a test run out ans back about a mile total w/o any filter, valve guides and rings were smoking ruined on return.

I''ve a sense of how long K/N runs before red color gone so will see how long ivory paper turns tan gray. I also run though tall grass at times so hard pollen grains that last centuries in the ground need filtering too.

Nor would I Dave if my scope of cycling was as limited as normal folks : )

Ugh after seeing you in action, like kicking video and documentation efforts I have to respect your assessment of me : ( Ms Peel had 3 mud flaps plus skid plate to reduce the grime on parts and me and inhaled abrasives reaching air filter.

hope this can fit on new Peel, $80 green best flow best filter cone under and foam wrap over that.
