Hi all,
Just wanted to pass on an experience i have had with my bike as it might help others as this form helped me with my build.
I have a fairly freshly restored mk11 commando interstate i was working on for around 2 years, the more notable/relevant improvements I've made are as follows.
Single vm 34 mikuni carb
Head ported and shaved to about 10:1 comp
CNW brembo brake master cylinder
CNW brembo hydraulic clutch
Tri spark ignition
Legendary instruments smiths replica GPS speedo and tacho
Belt drive with custom 6 spring clutch
Cosentino fork dampers
The bike runs really nicely but after all of this and my best efforts on the engine rebuild my bike leaked oil from the crank case joints when running and when left stationary after a ride. Leaks would occur on top of the crank cases behind the barrels and then along the bottom of the cases near the sump plug. I decided to buy one of Jims reed valve breathers. I purchased the tacho mount option as i had a blanking plate covering the outlet. Jim sent out a series of blanking plugs for the timing chest breather holes (which i have not installed) and a blanking plug for the actual timing case breather, and the breather its self.
I have fitted it and just returned from a 1200 km trip (now have 3200ks on the clock)and I'm happy to say that i don't have any engine oil leaks anymore! The breather is up there with the best mods i have made to the bike, it's so nice to arrive wherever i go without the stench of burned oil. Surprisingly my bike doesn't leak oil anymore when the engine isn't running either and i no longer leave a drip tray beneath it. I did not think the results would have been so good.
If anybody is thinking of using the same mod i can happily recommend it. I would post some photos but last time i tried with photo bucket i didn't get very far
