My wife ordered me the whole kit for my commando. I am pretty excited to put them on. Been out on a job in Alaska for the last three weeks so things are getting a little wonky! Miss the family and the garage! When I get home They will be there waiting for me.

Anyone else have the kit here and want to share any install tips etc? I am going from 1 amal. The amal works great though and no need to upgrade other than I am away working my butt off and I want a small treat for the bike when I get back. I am always jealous of my dads bonnie with the two carbs so I just had to do it. Actually my wife beat me to the punch and did it for me! thats love!

Any issues anyone has or pitfalls to avoid let me know!

Thanks

Your wife ordered the entire kit for you, and it was waiting for you when you returned from Alaska, correct? Does she have a sister?

I like them a lot. Make sure you get a good fuel filter as they are sensitive to dirt. When you start up with the choke on, there is no need to touch the throttle. They idle very nicely.
I hope you enjoy tham.

Your very lucky to have a wife that knows what to order, Jim's flatslide carbie's are pretty well set up for the Commando's, they are easy to set up and Jim will have the right jets for them, all you will have to do is put them on your bike, start it up (mine started first kick after putting them on) then set your air mixture and idle screws, I think it took me less than a hours work all up, you will be very happy with the way they perform, I have done just over 10,000 miles on my Flatslides and haven't touched them yet.

Haha she does in fact have a sister, although I dont know if shed do the same!!!

I am still here in AK, just sucks being so far from home for so long. I can take a couple weeks but this one was 21 days. ugh. When I get home itll be some time off from work so I will get time to take some great pictures and document the process of putting it together. It will be a good time for sure.

It is definitely a spec ial thing when your wife gets your parts for you. It really makes my day. Last trip now that I think about it, she drove al lthe way down to Bucchanans to pick my wheels up!

Key points:
1. I wouldn't use the O rings Jim supplies as when/if you take take the carbs off the rubber inlets then they easily dislodge and can disrupt the air flow. I have spoken to others who have just disgarded them.
2. Set the slide heights using feeler gauges as Jim says because you can't gauge the height from the back of the carbs like amals due to the flat slide shape.
3. Push the left short cable through the hole in the frame behind the head steady assembly and fit the junction box on the right side of the frame. The long front cable then runs straight ahead and can sit between the front tank to frame rubber mount.
4. Tape the two short cables (the outers) from the carbs together and to the back of the cable junction box because that IS the place where the cables will try to jump back out of due to the cable slack you need. Also it ensures that you have a straight entry into the junction box because those two cables are coming from very different angles (one each side of the frame).
5. Removing the float bowls is easy, do not use force. Lift the float bowl as you do it and it is easy - both for getting on or off.
Cheers

When you get your bike finished, I assume it will be your Avatar, with your wife on it.

Yes the Orings were a bit tight and could be problematic and no you don't really need them - they just fill a gap - so toss them if you like. But from now on all new customers will get thinner Orings that fit better.

I have the 32 mm flatslides as well ,and they are an easy fit up and changed the way the bike ran for the better. As mentioned , square O rings did distort due to e over tightening, Jim has mentioned this in his reply as well.
I posted an earlier thread on fuel figures and mikles(kms) i am going to do them again as I was runniong the bike pretty hard and well above the speed limit, so will do some legal limit runs and re calculate the fuel just for shits and giggles!!
Enjoy the perfomance change.
Regards Mike

well after posting I looked around the boards for more data on the carbs out there and such. Looks like there is a ton of carb information on the forums. Great reading.

Thanks all for the good tips, I will certainly be taking some pics of the whole kit and everything. I will definitely take the advice thats been given on al lthe points of interest.

The carbies are easy to install, the hardest part is setting up your fuel lines so they have a straight run from your fuel taps to the carbies, I put two 90 degree fittings on the taps and put two T fittings in the lines between the two taps so I could have nomal and reseve taps, the left T fitting to the left carb and the right T fitting to the right carb, all down hill run, straight run so it can't get no air locks in the line and doing it this way you hide most of your fuel lines.

Got any pics? I would appreciate it!

At the time I put my Flat slides on I didn't think about taking pics, my Norton will be diffrent to your Commando as my 850 sits in a Wideline Featherbed frame, but you can have your's the same way, as it was I did it 3 diffrent ways before I was happy with my set up and each time I used less fuel line, I got to do some work on my Norton this weekend so will take the tank off and take some pics, with the tank on its hard to see the fuel lines, I ended up using 2 X 90 degree tap fittings, 2 X T peice fittings, 8 hose clamps and of course 1 length of fuel hose cut to the right sizes for each carbie, you just have to work the best way for your tank and where your fuel taps sit, on my Feahterbed tank my taps are in line with my manifold bolts on the head (but of course above the head), you just have to work out whats best for your bike.

Setting up your fuel lines for the best flow will take twice as long than putting you Flatslides on your bike.

Hey icet,
My kit is working reasonably well, far better than the Amals.
Just a little prob that I can't get sorted at the moment.
I too thew the original O ring/spacers away, but found a siutable pair at
my local Bearing shop.
I also taped the 2 short cables together, to stop movement, but ran them as per
the Amal cables.
Yes the Carbs will bolt straight up and run good.
Don't oil the filters, they will be OK, but look towards a pair of quality K&Ns.

Thats why I came up with the simplified plumbing kit as in the photos below.

The original Orings may have had some swelling problems when exposed to gas. The new thinner Orings are on the right below. The size of the smaller Oring is 1-3/8 ID x 1-9/16 OD. I use square section but round will work.

Thanks for sharing the pics, I may steal that fuel line routing, And where did you get that filter? it looks pretty trick.
