Hey guys,
Can someone explain what happened with the John Player Norton team.
As a lad the only Nortons in the world (to me), were the beautifull Black and Gold JPS bikes.
Now all I ever see is the Red White and Blue colour scheme.
When and why did they change.?

The JPS was the upmarket ( read pricey ) Black Gold packet . for The Jet Set & cocain dealers .

The White with red / blue stripes was John player No ? . Less expensive , for roughians and Beer Drinkers . :P
 
AC, do I sense a black & gold replica taking shape? I've got a sweet fairing that you could 'borrow' for an extended period.
 
I remember a black and gold jps Norton racing at Eastern Creek in the GP back ????? The same year Criville ran up Doohans arse on the last lap and Caparossi won.
 
Off subject,,, but when I was a lad of 14 or 15yrs old I knew a guy that owned an original from new red, white & blue JPN.
A few years later I was at a get together of friends when a deal or swap was done where the JPN was swapped for a very nice holden monaro car.
To his credit the guy that got the JPN still has it, I nearly got my hands on it about 11yrs ago but it didn't happen.
He has since restored the JPN & to the best of my knowledge it sits in his longe room..

Don't forget, the Black/Gold JPS racers were the Rotaries, all the Commando based ones were red/white /Blue (Players No10 and No6 colours) after 1973 (the blue pre monocoque ones)
 
Which were the ones that had the spiderweb type frame kind of what Ducati uses. And did Norton use the motor as a stressed member too?

That would have been the 1974 "spaceframe" Commando.......which was a major backwards step, didn't work and finished Peter Williams riding career!

Thanks Seely920, I didn't know that the Black and Gold JPS were all Rotaries.
And Donald, It was a dream for a long time but perhaps it wouldn't be right with a pushrod motor.

Strangely enough, a later-than-Commando replacement (road bike) for the Commando used a Norton space frame style frame - and an engine not unlike a Commando. (850 parallel twin).
But with some modern refinements. Big seller...

there is even a more modern replacement, 800cc, parallel twin counterbalance = bmw f800st/gt
