I’ve just completed a crank regrind, a cylinder hone, and a valve job on my Atlas engine. Getting ready to start building the engine. I’m curious what is favored by most as a sealant when joining the cases? Thanks
I've been using this since the late 60s, has never failed me. Easy cleanup with denatured alcohol and is still pliable and easily removed 50 years later.
I used Permatex Form a Gasket on my Atlas way back in the 70's when we didn't have the internet and modern sealers . The old standby has stood up well for over 50 years and 50K miles.
Whatever you use, use it sparingly with a thin coat. You don't want it squeezing out on the inside and getting into any oil passages. The Grey colored sealants look better aesthetically if they happen to squeeze out a little on the outside of the cases. I use the same product on both the cases and as a base gasket. No leaks. Permatex Optimum 27036
I always let joints dry for 24 hours before doing anything else with the joined part. Being in a hurry is a recipe for disaster unless you are pitting at a race event and have no choice but to hurry.
Wellseal for me. I apply it to faces scrupulously cleaned with brake cleaner, with a small modellers brush. Very therapeutic. If Wellseal doesn’t seal, something is wrong; breathing, damaged faces, etc.
