Can anybody tell me approx how many John Players were made? :?: Thank you

JPN production

Hi Terry,

My understanding is somewhere between 200 and 300 of the '73-'74 versions and something like 15 of the '75 "cafe racer" MkIII electric start which was a JPN without the John Player name (Player had already pulled sponsorship by then).

Are you considering owning one? I'm a former owner and not a fan of these arctic snow frogs.

Terry,

I made an assumption you meant the Commando based John Player replica. If you meant the F1 rotary engined John Player, disregard my numbers. The same if you're referring to any of the real race machines either Commando or rotary based.

Good point. - Assume you don't mean how many cigarettes. I have an empty Players No. 10 box. (Yeah, sad bugger, collects everything !) I imagine they made millions a week of those, not to mention all the No. 6s we smoked behind the bicycle sheds :)

Thanks David, thats about what I thought between 2-4 hundred. I actualy found a 74 that had been leaning against a grage door for 3 years, the original owner had become to ill to ride. As I live in Washington state you can imagine the weather hadn't been to kind to it. As it only showed 16 thou on the clock I decided it should have a full ground up restoration, took 10 months. I'v recently been riding it to a few events and it sure is different. Its difficult to ride around town as anything less then 3 tho revs the fiberglass shakes its guts out but get it out on the highway and it becomes a different animal and a pleasure to ride, as long as you dont have to shift - shifting is not easy..
This is my second Commando, sold the first, but will probably keep this one. I mainly restore Triumphs but this is unique enought to let it hang out in my garage for awhile.

Thanks again for the reply its much appreciated

Cheers
Terry

David,

15 '75 MkIII e-start JPN style cafe racers?? I have never heard of this. Tell me more. Although I have never been a fan of the JPN, even when they were new, I thought I had seen all variants. Were these exported to the U.S. or all kept in the U.K.? There is an e-start JPN on the NOC website, but they clearly call it a replica and judging from all the aftermarket stuff on it I believe it is a replica of the JPN replica, but maybe...

'75 cafe racer

Hi Ron,

The electric start cafe racer was built likely from left over parts from the JPN. I have a poster behind me right now in my office of such a machine from NVT. It's the one with the horse jocket with one foot on the front wheel. It does not say John Player on it and was marketed as just the "cafe racer". It has rear disc and left side shift.
