Hi there
Here are the news, Yesterday no work, a day out at the German border with my wife
To day I make two brackets, the first one is the strap to find TDC with the bolt and the second one is a steel plate that come on the cylinder, my cylinder is a Maney one, aluminium, so no way to put a magnetic dial guage, now with the plate it will work.
I wish to re- tchek the cam timing on the pushrods, thats why I need to make a steel plate.
I will do the timing tomorow
My head is almost finish (flowing) and monday I will receive the gapless rings from JS, so if everithing is going well the bike will be on the road by the end of the week
Keep you posted
Yves

Thats right Nigel, its like watching a nightly TV series and finding out the channel dropped a couple of shows for the week!!!!

Yves, while you’re waiting why not fit some high compression pedals to that tri-cycle ?

Hi There,
A lot of news to day:
I tchek the lobe center on the intake pushrods, to do that I have to bolt a steel plate on the aluminium cylinder to put the magnetic dial guage
The results are 102 degrees BTDC, must be 103 degrees following JS instructions
This is the same result I fond with mesurments on the valve spring retainers, JS says not to warry about that 1 degree
The other good news: my cylinder head is flowed, the flowman says he made a 10% better flow, this must be good for 6-7 HP more...( he says )
The other thing he found: one of the Ex valve seat was not perfect in line with the guide, he says that the valve was closing with the JS spring on it but not perfect W/O the spring, so he recut the seat just a littel to have it perfect.
I will pick-up the head to day and make some pics, I will also ask him the before and after flow values. I will try to put everything on the tread later to day.
Same that we are not far away any more from Tiperary (I hope)
Keep you posted
Yves

Good report Yves!

We are all almost as keen as you to get it running again I think!

Hi there, to day I pick-up my cylinder head and the flowing reports, I wish to make some pics but my photographer was not home, so the pics will be for tomorow, sorry.
Good news for Fast Eddy, we found the flowing reports from the stock FA head, you will have it tomorow to.
Keep you posted
Yves

Hi Yves, any chance I could have a copy of your head flow figures to compare to mine?
I can send you mine for a comparison
Regards Mike

My mother's maiden name was Von Schcliecher so similarly genetically sensitive extremist with white trash southern rebel daddy go for it hybrid. I've been power over whelmed-traumatized by 2 dangerous Norton twins so wondering what you seek in this power lust and if up to really using it? Do you intend to spin/smoke rear in public or save for saner track days? With your power/wt potential its easy tempting to hit over the ton in short opens before 4th so are ya that type maniac? Hinged handling lurks if not a triple tamed rubber baby buggy as so easy to enter turns fine for all hell to let lose mid way through. Are ya brutal enough to WOT for front lifting G glees? Is your power train up to the engine potential? Dicing with current wheelie prone puter controlled elites implies over 130 mph front floating strong pull if in tight rural conditions and way over that if in freeway like nil turn roads. Do ya have estimate of power to wt ratio? 10 lb per hp gives ~ 12.55 sec 1/4 m if can hook up the launches w/o spin or flipping over. Takes about 65 hp for 650 lb cycle pilot combo to break under 12.5 sec. Two of my Nortons and 2 of Kenny Augustine's race Commandos could not be given WOT snaps in 2 lower gears as bikes flat ran out from under regardless of full might tuck down white knuckle bar grip - shoved over tall seat hump onto rear fender hanging on grips like flag in wind feet ripped off pegs. If not upgrading the rest of Commando drive train and suspension may be shooting self in foot. On the other hand better than sex with a movie star to leave modern behind leaping strongly ahead of them while their puters kick in limiting wheelie power as they lift up disappearing behind/helmet peripheral vision. Btw a great Norton risks neck injury from acceleration jerks. If not having these issue then ya ain't matched late 60's-early 70's Norton pecking order.

Steve, Yves bike is a Seeley, with seriously upgraded drive train and suspension. Yves himself is an ex racer, so I think he understands how to ride it. Therefore, most of your comments do not apply. You really should read through some of his threads Steve, they’re good!

There are many Norton riders and racers that ride their bikes to the extremes of their abilities, I dont know one who has injured his neck from acceleration jerks, you must be doing something seriously wrong.
Those sorts of accidents are more probably from crashing trying to get a Commando to do what it wasnt designed for
Regards Mike

I've tried to keep up with Yves impressive build so wondered why he's doing it if a public use cycle. I did not mean neck whiplash was from crashing - only by the snaps of acceleration launches. Kind of depressing you don't know what I'm talking about yet actually elating ya don't comprehend the Norton performance levels I've experienced. I repeat if not ending up on tail light on 1st or 2nd gear throttle snaps even with strong athletic efforts ya ain't got what it takes to contest with current cycles so what's the point of Yves excesses on power plant? Its dangerous to have tire spin power on just a twist of the wrist, so if hook up not main issue on mind then ain't worth the expense/effort for that level power but to show off on this small forum. No disrespect as engine power details are fun to read but applying the power is serious dangerous so mainly hoping to hear from Yves on how he expects to make it pay back. In my Ms Peel case after out accelerating puter controlled moderns into turns i let Peels hair down for more Gs force solo delights w/o endangering others trying to keep up. Yves has potential to do similar in more open roads against vintage or modems up to his hp top out speeds which should exceed 135 mph if balls enough & Commando able to tolerate it. If not eager capable to take on 150+ hp wheelie prone modern corner cripples in public over 130 then not in league I'm impressed by. Regardless or how intelligent capable a mechanic Yves is whats it matter if not maxing out on the power which is frowned upon here as requires illegal risky behavior in public which would offend Germanic disciplined Yves to admit too or might been seen as crazy as hobot.

Well Hobot, here is Yves' reasoning in his own words, as every winter he is putting on 10 kilos, he must therefore find 10 extra horses on his beloved Norton as well.

Seriously, Yves' bike is his treasure and a big part of his life. He spends an incredible amount of time thinking, planning, building, tuning, polishing every single part of it to make it perfect to his very demanding eyes. He is an extremely good rider with a serious racing pedigree to prove it and he does around 10000Km/7000Miles per year on his beauty.

Just to see the sheer happiness in his malicious eye under his battered Cromwell helmet as he selects first gear every time he starts for a ride is the complete answer to your questions. And beyond.

Alrighty I have no counter points to seeking perfection in this imperfect world so glad he picked Commando to lavish it on. Pretty much my own life style surrounding my non-Norton parts Commando un-ending details project. Yves is far ahead me in racing experience and operational joys. I know once 70+ hp attained on Commando size cycle it takes maturity not to turn power loose into public stunts so hoped to hear his reports of contests or close calls. I plan to get my Peel skills of traction loss and crashing done off road on knbbies so pavement antics on street tires is less tempting to risk yet more predicable. Spending what it takes to get his massaged FA head flow measured to report is a service to us all and top of pecking order satisfaction to boot.

Hi there,
Shit day to day:
My friend make the pics from the ports and the flowing graph, then we try to put it on access via Flickr, but Flickr is not working at the moment, very sorry.
Second shit: I was supose to receive the gapless rings to day, nothing happens, UPS says that the belgiam custom is the reason...
I work a littel in the workshop, put the valves back in the head and make everithing ready to be mounted.
I miss already two events this spring and this make me nuts...I am 67 years old, not many years left to go to events
Keep you posted

We are all on edge of seats rooting for you but life sure gets in the way as we age out. I'm 66 and have ex-wife that teases me back when I say I'll keep her posted, she quips back, she loves to get posted : ) Another one I've told will touch base with said she loves her base touched, sheeze gals and cycles up/dns. If I live long enough may follow your lead in head expenses to get what I'm after before too old. At least isolastic Commandos don't jar old farts nerves with even moderns valve train buzz. Oh yeah found can extend tire life if mainly accelerating when leaned holding pretty steady/sedate when upright but need twisty places to do this or I kind of zig zag on long opens/out of state travel with slight rythmic throttle/weave use - which gets noticed so traffic avoids the crazy biker yet not enough police notice and tire lasts 4000ish miles with plenty of hard pull joys.

My last few weeks delay innovated bending oil manifold pipes w/o kinking to align just right and mating Norton banjo head supply hose on one end to 3/8" hose nipple on the other into oil cooler into fine bypass filter by creating a mating -3AN on one end to factory head banjo on the other via custom brake hose while in between providing oil temp on engine exit oil and pressure taps on head flow for digital display about cig package size. My Peel is in living room to diddle tight fitting of various weird devices that please sense of vintage art deco with double functions of single structures.

I've had National champion dedicated built 2" low Norton mid 10 sec 1/4 m dragster open headers as daily rider for years that scared me routinely that police could hear to target w/o a chance to catch but your excessive/ expensive/extensive bigger engine + better head creation will be even more potent scary to trigger so wondering how much you intend to risk rear traction or wheelie control. There's outrageous stunts possible on your hp/wt ratio that don't require hi speed risks but adrenalize to weak tremble knees satisfaction - if not too old a fart to learn.

May think about water/methanol injection to stifle detonation retaining full torgue ign adv adding steam assist on pump gas when full heat applied. If not tuned & operated in mild pinging detonation on WOT snaps then not optimized as Nortons can be. Your fancy head will pack in extra mixture volume to make this an issue to consider. Unless timid throttle use which negates potent engine efforts but for stroking at home.

Hi there,
Finaly the results from the flow bench
Note: the flowman tell me that he was using inch h2o 28, you must know this if you wish to compare with the flowing you have.
In the first vertical column you will find the flow from my head when new
In the second column you will find the flow with the big valves
In the third column you will find the flow with the big valves after tuning
There are 12 steps, each step is 1mm (0.40") valve opening
The values are C.F.M.

Thanks for sharing Yves. My eyes are not as before, but the picture is out of focus. Please if you have another sharper it would have been nice. Do you have the velocity numbers too?

Hi Yves, as mentioned above, velocity figures would be great to see. This is where the FA head usually scores over others.
