Hello, I bought my Norton in Malaysia in 1979, and had it shipped back to the United States in 1980. I this point I need to sell it, but I am not sure what model it is. I am thinking a P11 or P11A ? I could check the VIN, but the bike is in Boston, and I am in Albuquerque. (I am planning to fly to Boston to sell it.) In the meantime, based on the photos attached, could anyone hazard a guess as to the model of my Norton. Thank you!

I don't think this is a P11 at all. similarities to N15 and the Nomad. if it is a Nomad I think these are pretty rare, message me with a price. will start looking thru some pics, , it has some looks of an early commando, this shows the evolution thru the years.

Atlas, Dominator or 650SS.

Featherbed frame is worth $1,500 by itself, engine $1,000 by itself.

Don't settle for less than $2,500. $3,500 if running, minimum.

Thank you for that idenification. Do you have any idea of how old the bike might be? When I bought it in 1979, it was used... I am not sure how old it was at that point.

It has not run since 1980, when I pulled it out of the shipping container, and drove it around my grand-dad's farm outside Philadelphia.

I will be selling it in Massachusetts, which has strict laws about registering motorcycles. I bought it from a friend in Malaysia, so I don't have a bill of sale. All I have is the 1980 Malaysian registration. I am thinking it will be difficult for anyone in Massachusetts to get it registered, so that might mean it is just a parts bike, which I guess will affect its value.

have been looking at some pics, the nomad has a single down tube so I was way off there, some much better people on this forum will come up with the answer

The bike is in Boston and I am 2000 miles from there, so I cannot check numbers on the bike. But I will have that information when I return to Boston on July 19. But in the meantime I was hoping to advertise the bike, and it would be good to have accurate model info.

It looks a lot like an Atlas with modifications. Silencers are not Atlas, but these are often changed by owners. The fuel tank looks Atlas sans the Atlas badges. The fuel filler cap is left of center, which indicates early (pre 65?) model. Monobloc carbs indicates early model, but lack of a timed breather indicates a later model.

The VIN number will nail it down.

Definitely NOT a stock Norton model, but a custom build "of the period", typical of people who buy a used bike and "fix it up" to their liking.

My earlier advice still stands.

It's the first one I've seen with the curved outboard plates bolted to the rear frame web...

I would think it is an up to 1966 650SS based on
- no breather on left hand end of camshaft which eliminates Atlas
- twin monoblocs , concentric were fitted in 1967

My best guess is it is 1964 or earlier as in the UK market
- we had paired speedo / tacho fitted in 1965 whereas earlier they had the speedo in the headlight shell with the tacho as an option as looks to be the case with this one
- the covered in tail-light mount appears earlier than 1964 (I've got an open sided one on my '64 and I think that's correct)
- a further clue would be if there is a steering lock in the top yoke as these were introduced in 1964 with wider forks.

But, hey, prepared to be shot down especially as the US got different specs at different times to the UK.

FWIW - rear mudguards are really sought after in UK (the original café racers ripped them off and chucked them away  - I've sourced two from the US at great cost) and that appears an original. I am not sure about the front but again sought after if original.

What is the engine number?
That will tell you if it is an Atlas or an SS bike.

Not an Atlas, I'm pretty sure they never had the small Norton emblem on the timing cover, or the red oval logo on the drive side of the engine. I'm guessing late Dominator with some mods. Prefix on the serial number will tell the tale.

I have to agree about the Norton emblem on the timing cover, but as for the red oval on the drive side, my 63 Atlas has one, which can be seen in image below.

Given that the OP said it was purchased in Malasia, I am revising my guess from an Atlas to a 650, or maybe it is a "bitsa".

Is this a P11 ?

You could be right Slick, I'll have to look for the red oval on my '65 Atlas, been a while since I paid attention to that bit.

Sorry if I came across a little blunt, but I think he will have better luck getting his questions answered in this forum section.
Good luck.
Cheers,
