OK thanks . I'll find something . There is a guy here in the states who speciaizes in selling rebuilt vintage Koni's . i know that the length is nominally 12.9 inches and can get approximate spring rates from various sources . I know that the original Koni 7610 series were not made specifically for the Commando but that they can be made to fit with a bit of machining . I have a set of IKON copies of those on my R90S and they work well , but I hear that the US IKON distributor is no longer extant or has had problems getting them from OZ so thought I might try and source a set of the originals .

As to your bike , thanks again for the pics . I'm all the more motivated now to get my other tank and side covers painted like yours . Understand that an interior decorator once told me that red is my "signature " color ( my intials spell red and I have two red cars to go along with two red Ducati's ) so she's probably onto something there . I see alot of otherwise nice-looking Commandos and my first thought is yeah I'd like to have it but it's going to cost me at least a thousand bucks to make it either red or JPN :)

It is a good paint job by a guy who was apparently widely respected--genuine Candy Apple Red, as per original specs, apparently. The exposure correction for the position the shot was taken in changes the actual appearance slightly , but it's nice.
The koni's are indeed 7160 series, IIRC, I sent photos of the dissembled internals to the agents when ordering the kit. The only fitting problem seems to be that they press slightly against the chainguard on the LHS, which can then lightly touch the chain. I spaced mine out with a washer inside.

Ranmar, After reading your replies I remember taking a pair of Koni's off the bike I am building now. The ones I removed are Special D's but the # on them is 76F-1282 they also have the #503 on them. I would also like to rebuild these at some point as the shafts look perfect. Where did you get the seals from? Are they just standard seals? How hard did you find it to remove the top haut? Mine is seized or so it seems. Thanks for any replys, Chuck.

The seals are just a standard sort of lipped seal. As I said, mine came from a distributor, but a mate rebuilt a pair later on, and he just measured them up and got them from a bearing supplier. Sorry, I don't have any ID on them as I am away at work. There apparently was a design change part way through the model run, internals were different, but the seal for either should be easily obtainable.

Which part is seized on? The top eye on mine unscrewed easily enough off the shaft, and the collar unscrewed from the body with a little effort. i fabricated a peg spanner for that instead of belting it around with a puch and hammer, which wasn't hard. The damping oil in the body probably keeps that thread functional. There is a precise amount of damping oil to add: I have that information at home, and I'll pass it on, along with photos of the dissembled internals, if anyone is interested.

I bought the Buell, going back down to ride it home tomorrow. I'll dig that Koni information up later today.

Very Nice, Looks to be in great shape. Just take your time in getting use to how sharp she will cut. Just look and it will go there.
