Hi All
I have just started stripping a basket case Mk2 Commando for a very long term restoration project.
The frame loop under the seat appears to be bent on both sides, but the bend point is not symmetrical on both sides. Am suspicious this may be damaged. Can anyone enlighten me if it is.
As you can see from the ruler placed on the frame loop, the loop runs off at an angle. Your advice please:

Interstate Mk2: Is frame loop bent?

Thanks as always

Looks about right. There should be one bend like that on each side. All the best with the resto.

The rear loop should be straight. Apply some judicious heat to the bends and straighten with a pipe bender. The loop is designde to carry the rear fender/taillight assembly and the weight of a passenger. This one looks as if it's been crashed/flipped.

Edit that: thought you were straightedging from the top, not the side. The wheels of a Commando are offset by 1/4" and the difference in the bends may have been to bring the loop back to center for the fender mount bracket to be centered.

I have just measured 3 complete bikes and a bare frame in my workshop, all of them taper in slightly towards the rear bend with the taper starting about 8 1/2 inches from the beginning of the rear loop at the plate where the spine tube terminates. They all look the same as the photo you have posted. The rear loop does have to carry a fair bit of weight and this is further back on an Interstate, so it is good to check whether it has drooped slightly if you are concerned about straightness. There is a strengthening modification on later bikes that can be added to the earlier frames, it consists of a web that goes from the inner shock mount along the rear loop for some distance.
