Hi,
First post....I'm doing a refresh (cosmetic and whaterver mechanical as needed) on my 73 Mk 1. It does have an HPI 940 kit installed by HPI back in the day. The engine has not been apart since the installation and has less than 1,000 miles on it confirmed by the original owner. I removed the timing cover for polishing and replaced the seals but before I install it I had some questions. The intermediate shaft pulled out slightly when the cover was removed. I pushed it back into place ensuring the oil hole faced down. It has little to no play when seated. My questions concern thrust washers. I've seen information about one being placed behind the intermediate gear but the parts book and manual have no mention of one. Is there one needed there? I confirmed none is behind my intermediate gear. Also, since the gear is held in location by the timing side cover boss, wouldn't a thrust washer there be a good idea?

Thanks for the help,
mike

Welcome, MCA,

No, the single timing chain models (with the camshaft driven points assembly including your 850 Mk1) do not have the thrust washer behind the intermediate gear, only the twin chain 20M3 750 Commando models have the thrust washer, so I suggest you don't attempt to fit one as it would probably put the timing chain sprockets out of alignment.

Thank you for the reply and the information. Good to know all is as it should be. I really appreciate all the information to be found on this forum!

Also be careful when you replace the cover of the oil pump seal becoming dislodged
Also it's best to use the camshaft tool for alignment of the camshaft seal

Thanks, I used the tool and replaced the oil pump seal with a new one.
