Bernhard, It depends on the circuit, however I've seen an RS125 Honda ride around a whole field of 600cc sports bikes on Winton Motor Raceway. Proves what ?
I suggest 'it is horses for courses'. A TZ250 is a great motorcycle when raced off a grid full of 250 and 350cc Yamaha, Honda and Suzuki two strokes. These days in Australian road racing, every grid is a mixed one with bikes of extremely different technologies. We get full grids, but the racing is rubbish. The guys might get a few laps and enjoy themselves, however the spectators might as well stop beside a freeway and watch the traffic for excitement. And it is the spectators who should be paying our bills, not rider entry fees.

This is is very similar to what I ride thats generally not as level, straight or smooth cleared ruts but close enough to give my groin and gripper muscles tensions. At some speed the suspension takes up most the rough stuff so feels a bit like superman crossing stuff as speeds that'd blur your vision in car or truck while beating the snot out of it too. Washborads that cause cages to twist on CoG d/t the bounced loose traction, cycles just cruise across even accelerating on some rear spin just fine no issue to forks as long as dampening down the potential snatch outs before they break free. This is not nearly the fastest way to cross Gravel but it is the most secure enjoyable on purpose way - as no one can really fast ride THE Gravel and get away every time. Tire texture matters in wet sandy muddy Gravel, but not on dust dry Gravel, then pure soft slicks thankyou.
