Inner Chain case Alignment

Hi all,
With the felt fitted in the inner chain case it difficult to gauge if the case in line due to the tightness of the felt against the shaft & as to whether shims are required under the centre post... is there an easy way to gauge this. or is it a case of taking that bloody felt out to 100% sure??
 
With the case bolted to the motor with the gasket in place you should be able to get a feeler guagevbetween the case and the spindle to get the thickness required. The felt shouldn’t make a difference. My experience anyway!

Like peter12 said. Don't even think about taking the felt out - IMHO the hardest job there is on a Norton is to replace that felt!
 
It all boils down to whether your rear chain is rubbing on inner case in how many shims you need behind the centre bolt, unless your referring to something else.

Push hard inward on the inner chaincase..
Pull out....
observe the stud gap in both instances.

This is the problem i found with the basket case i have... the chain links had worn through the case!!! so i need to get the washer placement correct
 
There should be sufficient room between the chain and the inner primary (when set up correctly) unless the PO just cranked down the center fixing nut without regard to proper shimming. More common, in my experience, is that the counter shaft sprocket was loose and the chain was run with too much play.

Either way it sounds like you are doing all the right things.

All Nortons are different some only have one shim and others can have 3 shims and some have no shims at all, so you might have to pull the inner case off a few times to get the right amount of shims needed, another problem what some do is over tighten the outer case nut thinking it will stop primary oil leak but over tightening will just warp the cases and make things leak even more, that can be a problem with one nut and centre bolt for such a big case and rubber seal, a few Commando motors I have rebuild had signs of over tightening of the primary case.
