Hi There ,

Is there anyone who has replaced their sealing disc's on the inner primary and has either used pot rivits or small screws to secure the felt washer and has a pic ?
I can't get to a local shop to spot weld , so I'd like to see a pic of this alternative method so I can see what type of screw etc to use !

Cheers Hendo

Cheers , the old plates had the oil slinger… is it necessary?
It does not hurt anything if you have room to fit it, but I do not think it is very effective, as it does not rotate and therefore does not sling oil.

Sorry, no Pic, but I replaced my discs using 4-40 x 1/4" screws and nuts. I think pop rivets would take up too much space.

Drill 4 holes thru the plates at 90 degrees apart, use red loctite to secure the nuts.
You might consider installing a lip seal . See https://www.accessnorton.com/NortonCommando/the-last-leak.32993/,

also see https://www.accessnorton.com/NortonCommando/how-to-make-the-atlas-dominator-primary-oil-tight.26860/. The latter link is specific to an Atlas/Dommie; but offers some ideas to improve the function of the sealing discs.

Thanks Slick , It's A annoying little piece of felt pressed inbetween those plates 😂 cheers Hendo

Yes, and it does little to prevent oil leaks. Slows the leak from a gusher to a seep. Mostly, it keeps dirt and pebbles out.

I stopped the seep with a lip seal. See the links above. I would do away with the oil slinger in favor of a lip seal.

It's so pleasing to look under my Atlas and see no drips on the floor.

Has anyone noticed a difference in the plates that hold the felt in place ?

The new plates seem to have a smaller lip for the felt to sit into, and once the plates and felt are spot welded/screwed together it squashes the felt out making it near impossible to push onto the shaft and the inner cover into place .... I gave up, reused the slighty battered original discs ( which had a wider lip for the felt to sit into ) used a socket as Jdub mentioned to slide over the shaft , and the cover and felt sliped on without to much fuss.
Bad copies ? They were bought from a reputable sellar here in NZ , so I'd be interested to know If there is a difference or not !

Cheers Hendo

I can envision a design change to squish the felt for a better seal, as I said above, the felt seal is ineffective.

If you assemble the discs with small screws, you will be able to change out the felt seal with no trouble more than removing the inner chain case.

On second read of your post, I see that getting the inner cover over the shaft, is your problem, not getting the felt seal into the assembled discs. The solution may be a thin walled sleeve, large enough ID to fit over the shaft, and small enough OD to fit inside the discs. Remove the sleeve after getting the inner chain case in place. Better yet, use your resources, time, and ingenuity to make up a lip seal.

Another solution: assemble the discs with 3 or 4, 4-40 x 1/4 screws. Place the screw heads on the back side of the outer disc, and solder or tack weld the screw heads to prevent rotation. Slide the parts together in this order: outer disc, inner chain case, felt seal, inner disc, and tighten nuts to get the squeeze you desire on the felt seal. Apply red loctite to secure the nuts. You can change out the felt seal in the future without removing the inner chain case.

Hi Slick, This was the isssue , the new disc's I used have a different felt holder pattern to the original discs ,I did use various sleeve's to fit the felt on but there was just no way, hence re using the old disc's
( I used the screw option with lock nuts )

The local engineering shop didn't have a small spot welder available.....

To Hendo's point while I had a 13/16" deep socket for the same purpose not everyone will. A length of thin-walled PVC or similar will do fine.

I did find the plates I bought from AN to be shallower and of course a new felt seal to be more trouble to press. The machine screw (dome head) and nut worked very well because you can slowly screw down the plates and pin the felt with little trouble, cutting the excess length of the screw with a Dremel and in doing so leaving it rough and difficult to come apart should the worst happen. And of course this method does mean if they ever do come apart you have bits swimming around in the primary chain case.
