Gents,

I’m importing a 1968 motorcycle from France to U.K.

I’ve got form V55/5. And the French log book, export certificate, etc.

I think I’m all set to send everything off to the DVLA, just one question, I’m putting the taxation class down as ‘historic vehicle’... do I still need to submit a valid MOT certificate ?

Would you get an MoT without a registration? Consider how the computer system at each MoT station is set up, they work from V5 details!

Is the V55/5 the NOVA I hear talk about?

Could be wanna these Baz... finally found an ideal power vs rider ability combination perhaps...?

I would say yes, as you will not get insurance or the DVLA will not issue a logbook without some UK proof of chassis number, hence MOT.

Yes. Perfectly correct to get an MOT on the chassis number I believe...

I have the French registration document. And it is insured already.

Not exactly, that’s a ‘Notification Of Vehicle Arrivals’ and is a part of the whole process. Form V55/5 is the form you send off to DVLA along with a load of other stuff to, hopefully, gain a U.K. registration for the imported vehicle.

It’s the kind of thing one used to go to your local licensing office for, which meant you could also get advice and return later if you’d missed something etc.

But ‘progress’ has removed that option these days. Now we just have to post the whole lot off to DVLA and keep our fingers crossed. Any errors being likely to derail the entire process...

They take the chassis number as my previous reply. Its up to you to supply the year of proof either with a Norton dating letter or if US import a date tag on the frame. The DVLA used to have either a man coming out and checking your bike or you had to take the whole bike to a local DVLA office -they, or most have been closed down now.

Ok, I got the answer from DVLA...

No said the very nice lady, I do not need and MOT. Instead, I need to submit form V112 with the application declaring that the vehicle is over 40 years old and therefore road tax exempt.

Fingers crossed...!

I suspect they will also want proof of age, so a dating cert (or the French registration doc if it includes a manufacture date or date of first registration) needs to already been in your pack or you will get another No.

I’m hoping the French registration doc satisfies them for proof of age as it’s clearly stated. We’ll see ...

One thing Eddie
Whatever the DVLA ask for you need to give them it
In my case I bought a bike from Germany
The DVLA states quite clearly you need to supply the registration document from the country it came from
I was advised by a DVLA recognized dating officer not to worry and just send a photo copy, which I did and I got refused a v5
I tried again again but with the original German reg document I finally got my v5
The DVLA will destroy your original French reg so take a photo copy of it
But as I said earlier follow exactly what the DVLA want and you should be fine
Cheers

I thanks Baz, I’m trying to do that but it’s a complicated business trying to pick your way through and decide what’s what.

The only way I found about the MOT / V112 issue was by phoning them, which I’d tried loads of times but they were always busy.

Some things have become far too complicated, for reasons I just don’t understand .... this is in part caused by Gov.’s buying into streamlined computer systems to deal with issues ,better dealt with on an individual basis .... is this an improvement , certainly not for the folks declared redundant ..... Good Luck with your “new to you” wheels Nigel .... hope to see a photo of you and new Ride soonest !

Im pretty sure they will accept the French reggie for proof of dating. They did with my USA reggies, all three of them. But you have to send the original papers to them and you never get them back. Id scan everything just in case. Big leg up, no MOT and no tax.
I must say I was amazed how easy it was. Three weeks and done.

Order I just read through the link the LAB posted (thanks LAB)...

Do I understand correctly that you submitted the form V112 without filling in the registration number with your current (old foreign) number, and you instead left it blank?
