Cook Neilson became one of Ducati's racing myths when he won on the Daytona track in 1977, on his California Hot Rod, a Ducati 750 SS that his friend Phil Schilling prepared for him

IMOLA .

Now defunct Cycle magazine editor Cook Neilson and his soon to be replacement Phil Schilling raced and tuned respectively a highly modified Ducati 750SS. Labeled the ‘California Hot Rod’ the 750SS may not have had the power of its Japanese competitors but it handled, something that couldn’t really be said for most Japanese machines of the period :p

Not sure what this bloke was up to at the time , but it doesnt look like he was hanging about .

Intrestingly , Steve Wynne / Sports Motorcycles had been a NORTON retailer .

In 1975 the Ducati 750 was increased to 860-cc. displacement and was raced by the Spanish motor-

cyclists Canellas and Grau in the Montjuich 24 Hours. The Ducati won an outstanding victory

A short time later the Ducati 860 also won the Mugello 1,000 Kilometers with the Grau-Ferrari team,

No Matt, not all Ducatis... I meant that Imola winning Ducati, it went to North America but got whipped at Daytona & Mosport, & may have even been beaten in Blighty by the factory J.P.N.s?

Matt - thanks for posting those pics. I hadn't seen the first one before. Apparently, the third of three works bikes produced for 1973 ended up in Ireland. It was the spare bike that Percy Tait was to have ridden but didn't, and Steven Cull, a well-known Irish road racer, rode it with some success during the late 70s. I kicked myself for not going to a national race where he won on the Ducati, which was 1977, I think. The bike was timed at 155 mph at the North West 200 Road Race, but I don't know which year.

Here's an on board clip of an Imola bike (allegedly) in Japan. The motor sounds crisp, a different sound to the larger bore engines. He's revving it to 9500 rpm.

Good on Paul Smart forhanging on to that Ducati all these years, I read that Dave Croxford was offered an F 750 J.P.N. [in lieu of wages owed when the race team folded], but turned it down! A decision he regretted..

There is no compremise with Dukes.. you either love them or you hate them~..

I take my hat off to the ardent mechanic / enthusiast ~

Having seen what GRM450 has done and been through of late ~ the Ducati are as masochistic as the Tridents and Rocket III.. and again they both have a glorious past ~

Difference being the Ducatis are still out there ~

And who could not like the sound of an angry Duke ~ after~ the sound of angry British Triple ~ 8) 8) 8) 8)

Classic Racer Sept/Oct `07 J.P.N. feature, P.33;
Has a photo of P. Williams on a blue factory Commando defeating P.Smart on his Imola winning Ducati in the `72 Hutchinson 100 mile race.

I've had my Darmah for 25 years, It doesn't get out much these days as I prefer to thrash my classic racer R90 ( parts are waaaaaay cheaper and easier to get) and yes the Triumph triple is nearly as good a sound as a Ducati
I had a rubber band injected SS but prefer the bevel for its old skool charm.
I never knew that Paul Smart was beaten by a Commando ....

Funny , even notorious Ducati booster Al Crashcart is on record in reckoning that even firing [120 degree ] triples sound best, -not excluding Ducatis.
That famous Daytona Ducati Superbike win in`77 has to be put in perspective though, it was a 50 mile race, won by C.Nielson at an average speed of 100.92mph, not too bad, however S.Baker won that years 100mile 250 race [TZ 250] at an average speed of 99.890mph, & G.Hansford [Kaw 250] was beating the ton- until he ran out of gas on the last lap, while in the lead...

Re; `72 Hutchinson 100 mile race wasnt that at Brands Hatch :?:
And didn’t Norton have 2 production Commandos kept specially for Brands Hatch where the whole engine/ gearbox was mounted more to the left (5/8 inch) so that they could lap the circuit 2 seconds a lap quicker than anybody else :?:

There is a funny story about the Imola Ducati. Ken Blake rode it here in Australia in the 70s. My mate ended up owning it, and sold it to a guy in Western Australia for about $3000, in about 1985. A couple of smart pommies turned up and asked my mate where it was, and I believe they bought it for about $11000. They sent my mate an email and told him what they got for it when they sold it back to the Ducati factory - about ten times their investment. It is still in the museum in Bologna.
