Was there ever an Ignition Points - Timing Cover made, without the 'Norton' script cast into the side?

Not that I am aware of. Jim

The points cover is the little round cover at the front - none of these had the logo cast in, they were all plain. Differing sizes over the years to support the Lucas Rita (these are the bigger, bulbous covers)

The timing cover is the big 'y' shaped cover.
On the Commando, these all had the Norton logo cast in.
There were several different types of cover - some plain, on the Dominator and Atlas (predecessors to the Commando) but you would be hard pressed to modify one of these to fit!!!

Seek and ye shall find, someone once said, apparently...

I now have a Commando (?) Timing Cover (not points cover) without the Norton script. It has provision for camshaft mounted points (as per 'S' model Commando, but no provision for the camshaft seal.

The internal cast marks are: 06-1072 AB

If anyone knows more about this timing cover, I would be interested to hear more.

So how could that work ? - the points would be permanently under water (oil).

There MUST have been something there, originally.
Any chance of a pic of the seal area.

Curious and curiouser
Bruce has sent these pics of a cover he has.
06-1072 AB

Oil seal arrangements look somewhat mutilated.

I'm wondering if these were some sort of interim cover between the old 750 Commando cover with tacho drive, and the soon-to-be cover with points and cast in Norton logo.
Could an external tacho drive be mounted and driven from within the 'points' housing ??

Yes, this cover appears to be botched and unusable.

So did the other one mentioned here (?).

Unless they were the same one (?).

The big hole (where the seal should be) has some areas of original casting, so it has not been machined out.

The webs on the spindle support look smaller than the ones on my 850 (single chain) cover i have on older twin chain cover (someone cut up years ago to make the cut away service tool) with small round drass badge on it and they match that. Also the twin chain type boss is shorter to accommodate both chains where the single chain boss has much longer webs and a step can be seen in the bottom of the spindle bore where the machined bore changes to a rough cast bore.

So it would seem to me at least to have been ment to be used with two chains. Maybe it was a development item from the changes of one to another or something to do with the attempts to fit a starter to the timing gears. I suspect like many things the answer is lost in the past.
