I removed the timing cover on my 1974, and without touching the oil pump the oil in the tank drained out from an area around the pump. Is this normal?
I have had oil being blown out of the gasket area in the front of the cover and was just going to replace the gasket. It was clear when I opened it up that the old gasket was bad in that area.

It is normal if the threaded oilway drilling in the crankcase next to the pump isn't temporarily blanked off with a case screw while the cover is removed.

I learn something every time I work on it. Thanks.
Make sure you have the rubber seal on the oil pump before you re-install the cover. I usually replace the 2 other seals while I have the cover off. Also you can check adjustment of the timing chain
