Ignition light

Hi all , ignition light not coming on when switched on, only the neutral light is working ,but when I touch bulb holder against frame it comes on , anyone got any idea what is happening here bike is Mark 3 Brian

Loose bulb conenction under the plastic dash perhaps.

Just reread the post and I see it goes on when touching the holder to the frame. Maybe a grounding issue.

The ignition light bulb holder on a Mk3 is plastic, so I''m not sure what you are touching to the frame. The light is fed from the keyswitch on the white wire, so touching the red wire to ground would complete the circuit and the bulb will light if the key is on. This only tells you that the current is flowing from the switch and the bulb is in working order.
The red wire from the bulb connects with a white/brown wire which attaches to the solid state warning light assimilator. Check the connections and continuity of this wire from the assimilator to the light.
If this is OK then check the white wire at the assimilator. It should have 12 volts when the key is on.
If this tests good then check that the E connection has a red wire connected that goes to ground, And the two AL terminals have White/green and Green/Yellow connections from the alternator stator and rectifier.
If these all test OK, you have a bad warning light assimilator.

I am assuming you have the usual solid state assimilator found on most Mk3. A few early Mk3 still had the silver electromechanical one that is mounted in a spring. (Mine did!)

one more question where am i likely to find this assimilator model is interpol Brian

If it's the solid state one, then its normally fixed to the front of the battery tray, if it's the silver can, then it's normally under the fuel tank.

could it be it was removed as bike has boyer ignition and power box Brian

Possibly, but it wouldn't be necessary to do so, unless the Power box is the single-phase "PBOX00166" type, or "PBOX00106" (Neg. Earth) three-phase type, that both have a built-in charge warning lamp circuit?

The solid state device is plastic box about 1" X 2" with 5 spade connections clearly marked "E", "AL"(2),"IGN", "WL".
The elector mechanical one is a cylindrical aluminum can mounted in a spring.

Hi to all who replied , powerbox is single phase, does that mean there should still be an ignition light and if so how do i check it Brian

Is it a "PBOX00166" type single phase Power Box?

If it is, then there should be an additional wire (from memory, possibly Red/White?? or Green/White?) that I think, connects to the (White/Brown) wire from the warning lamp that would normally go to the assimilator?
