Idle issues

I am now trying to refine and sort out my now running 71.
Seems like after its warmed up the idle wont drop down. It runs sometime (not always) at 2500-3000 at idle.
Is this the worn out Amals? I am running the original Amals.
Nothing seems to be sticking. I have tried blipping the throttle, wigging the cables at both ends, and turning the forks left to right. Not sure where to start looking.
Thanks

Try strobing the ignition timing, and be CERTAIN that the ignition aau is retarding at low rpms.
Or you can be chasing your tail for quite some time.

The other thing to check initially is that the carbie slides are dropping back right down,
and not sticking slightly in their bores - from having been overtightened to the manifold somewhere in the past.

Also that there are no air leaks in the inlet plumbing, including thet the rubber balance hose is not perished or holy...

everything Rohan said

but in addition I would do a quick check of your air screw settings, they should be around one and one half turns out from seated

too often they can be more than that which creates a too lean condition and hence a racing or higher idle

turning the air screws in makes the idle circuit richer which can lower the idle, check your settings?

Just a thought, but if the carbs are original, have you dismantled and cleaned?
After screwing around with similar problem, I went ahead and bought new Amal premiers and started from there. I also keep a #78 drill bit attached to a WD 40 spray tube that I regularlay use to clean out the crap in my air idle adjuster.
Just rode my Commando today after it had sat for almost a month, and started 3 rd kick and idled fine. Ed gave me a good deal on the carbs for both the Commando and my Atlas.
