The other day I was thinking about how to design the ideal british bike.
Here's what I have so far. Triumph lower end with plunger oil pump, unit construction with 5 speed gearbox, BSA top end and head with enclosed push rods and easy access to rockers. Norton frame with isolastic mountings and disc brakes front and rear.

sounds a lot like a Triumph T140 750 Bonneville (disk brakes, 5 sp, unit construction) with the extreme vibration removed...a couple of friends ride them and say they are great allrounders and the bike they would keep if they could only own one

Well it will be ideal for you.

My ideal bike is a standard 650ss.

Re “Triumph lower end with plunger oil pump”

This seems odd, considering Geoff Monty was discarding these on his Triumph twins way back in the 1960’s and fitting a Manx gear type oil pump :!:

For racing, but I believe it's been proven that the plungers are just fine on the street and a gear pump on a Triumph is actually detrimental.

I am curious about how they may be detrimental. Care to expound a bit on that.

I think the Kawasaki W650 is possibly the best looking modern "british" bike, shame they stopped making them.

Agreed, the Monty’s “Monard” was a racing bike, but on the basics that “racing improves the breed” why go to plungers :?:
Are Triumph the only motorcycle in the world who use plungers :?:
I had a 650 thunderbird that when taken up to 75 mph and then shut off the throttle, it left in it’s wake a smoke screen that would have been comparable to a World War one/two battleship running away from danger :!:
