I have lost the nut off the top gear box mount bolt the one that goes through the adjuster on top of the box can some one be so kind to tell me the size and thread please

The three nuts on these adjusters are all the same - 5/16UNF
I always swap the nuts for nylocs, and use a spring washer.

...sorry the pic is a Dommie, but the part is from a Commando, and it's the clearest pic I had to hand.
 
Don't feel like the Lone Ranger, it happened to me too. I believe it is 1/2" American. I built one while waiting for a new one, took a little time with a hacksaw and a flat file to make one that worked.

The upper gearbox mounting bolt is 9/16". The lower mounting (pivot) stud is 1/2".

However, two types of upper mounting bolt and nut were used on the Commando (not including the 850 Mk3).

Early 9/16" x 20 tpi CEI (not Whitworth) bolt with special head fitted on the LH side and hexagon nut:
