Hunting and High idle permanent fix! - TRIAL

Ok, so I removed the hose between the airbox and the IAM (it a reinforced rubber s-shape) although I couldn't see any cracks it is crammed between the two connectors and did have a plastic binding wrapped round. Not sure if this is part of the hose or something done at a service. Anyway, since I had the hose off I added some sheat shrink. Well now, there is a difference of sorts. I am getting a bit of hunting just before stopping but settles down quickly to 1200 revs which is a big improvement. Not sure why but could be leaking at the connectors and simply refitting them has done the trick.
Hey Graeme,

Could you please show a picture of the area. Will be useful for future reference. Thanks.

Steve.

The S hose should be very soft and pliable silicone type , not a stiff hose . Any extra length should be trimmed off so not to cause any bending or stress on the flange . The only reason for this hose is to provide filtered air to the IAM , it can be removed for testing. The hose that runs from the IAM to the manifold balance pipe must be leak free , clamps here on both ends will help. (broken record)

Another evening in the shed. Taking on board Tony's comments I took off the IAM-Manifold balance pipe. It was already halfway up both the spigots, being held in place only by the fuel pipe trapping it, and came off by lightly pushing it with my finger. Not a great start and backs up previous concerns about the inadequacy of this part. Couldn't see any cracks and is made from the same material as the hose from the airbox to the IAM; the stuff you typically get auto hose pipes made from. I replaced it and fitted hose pipe clamps both end (a bit of a faff). Started up and all OK but it is a wild stormy night outside so will have to wait for a bit clearer weather to see if any improvement.
I was asked to take some photos which I have done but I think you need to be VIP to post them. Given the sound advice I have had from this forum I am more than happy to go VIP!

The first pic is the offending hose which is now a prime suspect for hunting
The second pic shows the hose back in place with ends clamped.
Thanks guys for guidance and patience.

Thanks Graeme,

These threads are ‘gold dust‘ when your otherwise well functioning Norton suddenly sprouts a gremlin! Pictures always assist, especially for we riders with limited technical know how.

Hope that you find a long term solution for your hunting issue.

Steve

Quick follow up after clamping the hose.
Just done 25mls on open roads then into town traffic and no hunting!!!!! bit soon to get too excited but certainly the first time nearly 4 years that's happened.

Do you mean you have been living with hunting and high idle for 4 years now ?

That's right but not high idle, been on to norton/dealers about it since I bought the bike new. After every service bike was fine for a day or so. Let's hope this is a permanent solution.

They O2 delete plugs may still offer benefits . Don't throw them away . You may want to revisit that again later.

I have a leak somewhere. My hose causes the flanges to seperate because its rigid and just doesn't allow the flange surfaces to sit flush for very long. It seems as though that's where your problem has lied as did mine. Cheers.

Hunting is back, not severe but is going between 1200-1600 revs when the bike is at rest, turn ignition off then on again, and hey presto tick over back to 1200.
I'll try the lamda caps again. BTW fitted an oil breather after me turning last Saturday and being the only bike without one.

That vent should help prevent oil leaks from the starter and transmission.

Are you willing to delve further into this ? I have some ideas to share and wonder if you've read any of the posts about this in the past. I honestly never knew until now that the OMEX also suffered from these idle issue problems . Have you had your map checked for correct version ? I know Richard Pearce was updated to a new version some time ago and he has Euro 3 OMEX , this usually includes a new bin file loaded in . If all is well with your map and bin file , then look into Idle motor and IAM cap . Clean these things out and or replace . I have sourced a German supplier for the LOWE 57177 when Norton was shut down. BUT by no means try a cheap alternative . The reach is not the same on all of them and do not work well. If you can find the SIEMENS D95177 , this is listed on the factory drawings also. I cannot find a supplier for the Siemens unfortunately . My last fix was to deck the IAM cap , not because of leaks but for plunger reach . If the plunger must travel say 9mm to fully close but can only travel 8.5mm , you see the issue ? Once the engine is Fully warmed up , the operating conditions must still be met as far as air into the engine (too much or too little). When the motor is fully hot , all parts have expanded to this new hot condition ( throttle body expansion etc..) . SCS Delta recommend disconnecting the battery before disconnecting the IDLE motor because a inductive kick could damage the ECU , so be careful .

The hunting btw 1200 and 1600 is a different issue. I still get that intermittently, also a low idle and the occasional stall. Beats the crap out of 2400 rpm at a red light. That was caused by atmospheric air to the the IAM....(your leak) The hose to my IAM was never soft and pliable. If it were, it would probably kink wit the bends they had to put into it. Wonder if aluminum tubing would do the trick with just a ruber tip clamped onto each end.
