How to change the oil 961 Commando

Thanks. Changing the oil on this bike is one messy pain in the ass, comparatively speaking.

Good vid. It’s strange you don’t have a level plug for your transmission. The machinist probaly forgot to put it in. Also, see my manual on oil change. Sanding the surface of the copper washer is not the same and softening the copper. The copper squishes so sanding may only help once or twice. Annealing can be used a thousand times over.

There is also a video Peter Howes did from Norton Canada on oil change.

Good, straight forward video for even a novice to follow.
Well done.

What? No tranny oil level bolt hole.
No problem, that should even reduce the weight of the bike by a few grams.

There was no level plug for tranny at older models. My CR 2012 has now one since one month...

This may have been answered before, but in the models wth the return oil line check valve, how is the oil drained from the oil cooler and return oil line? Or is the amount left not enough to worry about?

I do it probably every 2nd or 3rd oil change. You have to pull the lower line off the oil cooler or off the check valve. No real easy way. Replace the crimp on clip with a screw hose clamp. That's what I do.

Thanks for the feedback guys. I own several bikes and actually ride for a living (tour guide), but my Norton is something special. It puts the biggest smile on my face.

FYI my sump plug on my late '17 Euro4 CR has a 6mm hex hole in it. Long allen keys threatened to break so got a little Draper set from Halfords with proper socket/6mm male end.

Mine was stripped by the dealership before I even got the bike. I replaced it with a standard 13 or 14mm hex head plug for my first oil change. So much easier to deal with now.

I've just been on cNw's site. The only part by 107 being shown is the gear puller and the manuals are gone. WTF?

Hi Guys. This is a video of me changing the engine and transmission oil on my Commando 961SE. I thought it might be useful to some members who are new to the procedure.

Useful video! Thanks for posting.

I notice you used synthetic oil in both the engine and the transmission. Norton recommends semi-synthetic for both, but I know some people who use synthetic in the engine and semi-synthetic in the transmission.

Is there any downside to using synthetic in the transmission?

I use full synthetic (10W40) in tranny and semi-synthetic (20W50) in engine. Works good for both!
