Not talking about racing here, just regular Commando road riding.

How often do you change your engine oil?

Fresh oil and filter in the late fall before winter storage. Fresh oil and filter in the spring, along with riding season inspection. Fresh oil and filter in the middle of summer.
Valvoline VR1 20W50, Liquimoly MoS2, Wix ‎51348 filter.

My routine is likely overkill, but it's part of the fun of maintaining the bike. I should add that I change the trans fluid (Redline MT-90), in the late fall as well.

Cheers,
Rob

Why would you drain fresh oil and replace a fresh filter after changing it when the bike is put up?

Each spring new oil and rear tire.
Usually around 8000 km (5000 mls)
Filter every 2 years.

I change the oil every 2000 miles or so. By then it's almost needing a quart added anyway, so it's a good time to change.
I change the filter after three or four oil changes.

VR1 20/50 or Castrol GTX Classic 20/50

One day I'll cut a well used filter open and have a good look inside. I suspect that they are still OK even after few oil changes, that is, still doing a good job of filtering and not offering too much resistance.

Every time i change pistons and rings 😏.. Seriously , around 1500 miles for oil and filter. I bought a case ( 12 ) of Wix filters off Amazon for $90 CDN ..

yeah, right, sorry. I got caught up in changing the filter when I change the oil. This is only during the riding season though. From the fall to the spring the filter doesn't really do anything since it's in storage over the winter. So, in this case I just drop the oil from the case and tank (since it wet sumped over the winter), and put in fresh oil for the new riding season. I can probably reuse the same oil, but as soon as it comes out of the engine I just dispose of it. Filters are relatively cheap, and oil is now US$26 for 5L jug. so I don't lose sleep over changing the oil and filter often. Most of the time, I'm needing to add oil so an oil change at that point works for me.

That's cheap oil .

Valvoline VR1 20w50 Amazon. Castrol Classic 20w50 is now US$37 for a 5L jug. The prices were reversed a few months back. Not sure why Castrol has jumped so high and Valvoline dropped so much. Or rather, they have switched positions on the price pole.

Hmm , maybe a side trip into the U.S.A. is in order . N.Y. rally methinks a good reason .

Well, I make enough trips into the Waterloo area in the summer that I could bring you a couple jugs. Only cost you the price of two cases of Sleeman:), and a good excuse to take a ride to Waterloo along maybe highway 7.

They know there was a lot of people that grew up using it, I was one of those and it's all I used in both my truck and motorcycles. It was cheap at Walmart and now I don't see it there.
