Atlas rear brake lever pivot.
The pivot assembly has a spring and a tab washer that the spring hangs on to. How is the position set on this tab washer?

I answered my own question...sort of. Still many questions. It seems to be a nearly worthless feature.

there is a brake shoe wear indicator?
I am talking about the return spring at the pivot of the long brake lever and foot pedal. There is a tab washer that would put tension on the spring if the tab was positioned correctly. But it seems like it cannot be adjusted much.

As I remember, its function is to position the lever, not to change the spring pressure.

OK I misunderstood your question.
The footbrake lever spring should be hooked up in such a way that it returns to it's stop.
Best look up some Google images or workshop manuals to see exahow it goes back.

On my Atlas, the lever stop is the foot peg bracket. If you raise or lower the pegs excessively, then the spring may need adjusting, as well as the brake light switch bracket.

The footrest should not act as the brake lever stop. The tab (#25)on the pivot behind the brake lever is the stop. The outer point of the spring engages in the hole on the inside of the brake lever. Also note that the flat washer goes on the outside of the frame just under the tab, not inside under the nut.

Thanks, bearflag, I will have to look into why mine stops on the foot peg. Perhaps I am missing the tab #25, or it never was adjusted properly.

My ES2 stops on the peg too, had assumed that they all do that sir.
Something to add to the list.

I know it's c. i. But you could if you wished, weld a tab onto the pedal with an ajusting bolt c/w nut like a lot of far eastern bikes have.

Really interesting. I have 2 featherbeds and had a third. The brake pedals on all of them stop or stopped on the footrest. I'm going to have a look for the stop tab on the bikes that I have now. They've both had major work done over the years so it's possible the stop was just omitted at some point. If I find anything interesting I will report back.

That's what I was looking for. Tab #25 is positioned at 3 o'clock, mine is at 6. Time to revisit the brake pedal situation.

Just had a look at my Atlas. There is indeed a tab #25, situated at approx. 3 o'clock. It was never adjusted to function as the pedal stop from new, unless the foot pegs were originally set for the rider to ride like a thoroughbred racing jockey, in which case he would have been obliged to extend and lower his leg to apply the brake with the heel of his foot. WTF?
