Got a '74 MkIIA. I removed the cup washer and the felt washer and there doesn't appear to be any way to remove the dummy axle/bearing assembly. It has to come out from the outside because there's an integral lip on the inside that holds the short dummy axle in.

I finally finished tearing the whole bike apart today, except for this last piece that has me stumped. :?:

There is a snap ring p/n 06-2090 holding the bearing in the rear brake drum. Remove that, then drive the dummy axle out the back side which also drives out the bearing.

There is no snap ring visible. I would have known to removve it if I had seen it. (I may have to load a couple of pics for clarification). There is apparently no way to remove the assembly short of driving it out under force from the inside out. Still stumped.

Pictures are cheaper than broken parts.

Maybe a MKIII set up is different due to the rear disc but I simply knocked mine out and did not have to remove a bearing or snap ring. All I did was give the stub axle a smack with a nylon mallet and out it came.

Item 47 in this expoded view is the snap ring that holds the bearing in the rear brake drum. It's under the dust cover disc.

My avatar didn't post, but if you capture the http: and paste to address in internet explorer you will get and small image. Save that in your photo file then view with zoom function. Again the snap ring is #47 in the exploded view.

How does the brake drum dummy axle/bearing come out?

Old Britts is the easiest to grab parts book images from.

My bad, I think I need to remove what appears to be a washer (item 30) that's underneath the felt washer (item 33). I tried to poke at it earlier, but nothing would move, and I realize now it's a flat washer that's probably just stuck from rust. I'll try again tomorrow. Thanks for all the great help.

By strange coincidence I've just fitted the bearing behind the dummy axle also, since I had to renew the sprocket. I was a bit horrified to find that half the bits in the old assembly were missing!

I found that in both the old and new units there seemed to be a bit of bearing pinch, If that's the right word?. I tapped out the old bearing out, found that it would spin a lot easier. After fitting the new bearing to the new sprocket/drum there is a reduction in the freedom to spin the inner race. Is that normal? Seems a bit odd to me.

Cheers,

H

So I removed the washer that's on top of the bearing and then the circlip, then whacked on the dummy axle with a rubber mallet but the bearing won't budge. Is it just stuck?

I think you need something a bit more substantial, like a hide/copper mallet. Don't forget to put the axle nut back on, before you start persuading the bearing to drop out. Mine needed a few weighty blows, before it came out.

A block of wood on the dummy axle then smacked a few times with a hammer did the trick. BTW, any recommendations for type of grease to pack into the new bearing?

I would think any decent wheel bearing grease.

I'm stuggling with the same issue except I can't get the bearing spacer to come loose from the inner race of the bearing so I can remove the washer to reach the circlip. Any tips on how to get a good grip on it and pull it out of there? Also had a real struggle getting the rear tire off, looks like the original. Had to cut the carcass off with a hacksaw and then use my dremel tool on the beads. Tomorrow will be a better day.

Hello gentlemen. I'm facing the same issue. I see the exploded view but I can't make out the parts I'm seeing on my rear drum so I've tried to include a photo. The silver disc does spin around when I poke it with a sharp object.......is it possible or necessary to pry it out of the hub in order to access a circlip to allow removal of the hub. I just want to check the bearing and maybe repack it after 30 years of no use. Thanks in advance.

Does this help?

Quote (pdf pages 141/142):

SECTION H5

"1971 and later models

3. Prise [pry = US] out the lipped washer covering the felt seal.

4. Collect the felt seal and felt retaining washer.

5. Using circlip pliers, remove the large bearing retaining circlip."
