Below is a pic of the lower transmission bolt on my 72 Combat.
Something tells me this is not normal. It slides back and forth, but not all the way into the left side hole.
Thankfully, the bolt gets stopped by my exhaust pipe from getting lost completely. British engineering!
Left side nut obviously did get lost sometime.
Anyone know the spec for that nut so I can jack up the tranny and slide 'er back in all the way to secure it?

Correct sir! I used wrong terminology. Two nuts = stud!

# 38 in that diagram should work. clicking on it does not reveal any info.

My gearbox pivot stud/nuts fell out last fall. I replaced it with a 1/2-13 spec 8 bolt and matching nyloc nut and 2 good thick steel washers. I fed it through the timing side. Does not take much to loosen the exhaust a little to accomplish this.
No big whoop.

The plain shank on most bolts usually is a smaller diameter than the thread diameter, most bolts have rolled threads not cut threads, the rolling of the thread increases the thread diameter, so in manufacture the bolt maker starts of with a blank bolt
which is undersize in diameter, when finished the thread should be on size but the rest of the bolt is undersize.
In the tranny mounting its advisable to have a neat a fit as possible for the two mounting bolts,
You will find the correct stud is 1/2" over its full length , no doubt the threads are cut not rolled.

Another example of why it's dangerous to substitute parts, though I will readily admit I am often tempted to.

Duh Dudes he means that the tidy interconnected genius of Brit's construction prevented loss of a major connector even w/o its Brit vibed head lost. On the other hand some may feel Englishmen could of made better access to thing w/o having to remove other items first. Ever check the other cradle though bolts now and then too?

Don't blame the Brits for your maintenance neglect  What else needs re-torqueing on your bike?

You misunderstood me Roadrash - I was tongue-in-cheek praising them for not allowing the stud to fall completely out, not for nuts coming loose.
I am not quite that insane.

Thanks for feedback - I will order a proper stud and bolts from Fred.

If you want to go riding today, run to your local auto parts or hardware store and purchase a 1/2 - 20 UNF or NF nut and the appropriate washer.

I see that now. well meaning sarcasm can be hard to deliver with just the written word. One thing for sure - I'm going to go check that stud assembly on my bike.

Right on Peter! 1/2 x 20 UNF nut and lock washer has it back together.
Levered up the tranny a tad to re-insert the stud into left hole.
Would go for a ride today but with howling 40+ MPH winds I think I will wait until tomorrow.
That will give me more time to check other fitting tightness in the oil dump that doubles as the underside of my Nort.

I just got off the phone with my sister and brother-in-law today who happen to live just south of Albuquerque close to where the 25 crosses over the Rio Grande. They were telling me how windy it was i.e. kicking up dust and everything. Yesterday we had a big wind storm where I live in Tehachapi, California which prevented me from riding my motorcycle. It was just too cold and windy. So I guess our wind storm went over to your neighborhood for some fun.
