Now I see why the bike was built around the horn, before I was thinking it was the battery box, but noooooooooooo... it's the horn.

On my Interstate I had mounted a pair for Fiamms on either side of the front of the battery box. They faced forward and made a decent sound. This time I'm going to tuck the horn where it's suppose to go and let the Dunstalls make the noise.

I get a box from Paul and there is the Fiamm.

So I hoist the horn up and the ideal position is actually facing the wrong way with no clear way to mount it. I am able to flip it and I think this is a good compromise.

Horny Situation

I can easily come off the original horn mount (which is what I assume the angled piece coming off the battery tray is) and support the horn. I need to pull my rear fender out of the garage rafters and confirm the fit.

But then I also need to figure out how to wire this sucker.

Horny Situation

Is this suppose to take some weird car wiring plug? Thoughts?

Every time I hear the horn I think of Edgar Allen Poe's short piece, "A Cask or Amontillado"; it ain't bricked in, but it might as well be...

Those male electrical connectors are meant to be mated with their female counterparts. I highly reccommend that you solder on some 14 ga pigtails, slide some heat shrink down on your joints and be done with it.

Last year I was showing my grandson my Mk III shorly after bolting the engine/tranismission in and adding the rear fender and wheel, it looked really nice. The only wires I had on it at this point were the horn wires, you know, 'cause it's burried. I went to fetch a tool and I hear him say, "Grandpa I found these wires stuck in your motorcycle, it looks much better with them out"...

Putting the horn in is something you want to do only once.

Those two holes hold the fender on, Or maybe you have it well behind on something? There is another bracket I don't see in the picture.

It might hold the fender on, but I can still use the holes to hold a horn bracket. Rear fender fitting will happen this week so I'll know more.

Soldering on something to those terminals was what came to mind. Is there a (+) or (-) to them?

Once the horn bracket has been attached to the battery tray and secured by two nuts (with the bolt threads pointing to the rear) the extended threads of the horn bracket bolts also act as the fender/mudguard front lower mountings.

This isn't clear from the parts diagrams, as the two assemblies are shown on separate pages! And the horn assembly parts are drawn facing in the wrong direction in regard to the frame!

So, two nuts [50] secure the horn bracket, and two nuts [51] (and washers [49]) secure the fender.

I assume it's pretty apparent once I offer the fender up?

Well....it should be?

Also note there are additional nuts, bolts, spacers and plate at the upper front fender mounting. [31]-[35] (shown duplicated in the parts drawing!)

You can see the bottom of this bracket on the left of the picture.

Yes, it looks like it's in approximately the right position (presumably with the two spacers in between the frame and the plate?)

Spacers are missing. But I can see why they are needed so I'll improvise for now.

Horny Situation

There is something like an inch or more space between the fender and the mounting holes on the battery box. The fender hits the oil line and tank well before the fender would seem to fit into place.

At least once the horn is in there, it ain't coming out...

Horny Situation

Mocking up the horn mount.

Horny Situation

Soldering on the terminals. As long as I got the positive/negative right I should be good to go. They weren't marked so I assume it doesn't matter. Let me rephrased that, I pray it doesn't matter.

Horny Situation

And done, you can see the wires hanging out ready for the rest of the harness and stuff.

So that's it for the horn.

Dave:

The original horn mount also provided the bolting through the bottom most pair of holes on your fender.
Your custom horn mount doesn't do that.
Why not use the original mount?

Uh, cuz I don't have the original mount?

Dave:
OldBritts has one for $8 062169
Two spacers 062170, two bolts 060652, one bolt 060359, five nuts 060029, lock washers.
Appears to be same mount used higher up so if you have it you could duplicate it.

The 062169 front upper fender/mudguard mounting plate assembly is not the same as the horn mounting plate assembly, and the holes are certainly further apart on the upper plate.

What you are actually looking at in the parts diagram, is the upper plate mounting assembly drawn in twice!

If you check the '71 parts drawing the assembly is drawn in three times. http://www.oldbritts.com/1971_g22.html

two bolts 060652

The two "060652" (upper plate to frame) bolts are 1/4 x 28, 1" (should be listed as items [33] and not [34] - according to the diagram) although they do share the same part number as the battery tray/horn/fender bolts.

The single "060359" (plate to fender) bolt is listed as 5/16 x 24, 5/8" (should be listed as item [34] and not [33])

The single "060029" nut is listed as 3/8 x 24 (although I believe it should in fact be 5/16 x 24 to fit the 060359 bolt) so four out of the five 060029 nuts you specified wouldn't fit anything.

The two nuts and washers required for the 060652 1/4" bolts are apparently missing from both the diagram and the parts list!
