I'd sell my original 850 frame for less than that, and all this work has been done. Blasted, primed and painted with auto paint.
I had bought it to build a Commando racebike but that will not happen.
No doubt.

I just said when I consider my time.

Also, it depends on where you live. Apparently, the treasury doesn't print enough money to get a frame painted near me! I used to have an auto shop guy who did it for $300 (I did the blasting) but he decided it was too much work and won't do it anymore even for more money!

I recently had a 750 frame blasted locally for the $80 shop minimum charge. Then, I sprayed it with Spraymax epoxy primer which is a really good 2 part primer with activator in one can. One can is about $20. No gun to clean or extra materials to buy!

I got quotes of $200-300 from shop with their own mixing station/spray booth just to paint it black now that it's in primer. The cheapest way for matching paint WITH hardening agent would be to buy 2 cans of Spraymax custom mixed black to match the original frame paint, and hope that 2 cans cover it!

After three years searching for someone to blast for me, I spent over $5000 getting setup to do my own inside my shop.

Other than wait for a sunny, warm, low humidity, windless, day outside, painting is difficult - big shop - way too many bikes in it to have room to paint. There is no doubt that it can be done for less than the price of a new frame delivered, if your time is not worth much and if you get the frame cheaply.

In the case of the MKIII I'm doing, there were no frames worth having to be found. The two that were on eBay both had damaged side-stand lugs. Pre-MKIII frames are usually available, MKIII frames, not so much.

I'm changing the frame on a MKIII right now with a new one from AN since I couldn't find a good replacement. There have been couple of tiny hiccups and the frame is powder coated so a little fiddling with opening holes. Shipping to the US was expensive but I bought a bunch of parts with it so not as bad. The frame ended up costing about $1500 with all the shipping cost attributed to it.

I've changed frames on pre-MKIII before. When you consider my time to find a frame, sand blast it, and cost of the frame and painting or powder coating - I think a new frame from AN is less expensive!
Andover frames now are out of stock for at least three months due to supplier change.

James, the cash loss is one thing, but worse is that you’ve lost a year (or soon will have) and that’s something you can never get back.

I’ve never had a new AN frame but others on this forum have and have reported positively.

Personally I would buy one if my frame was seriously damaged. These frames are now very old anyway. When one subtracts the cost of repairs, a new one isn’t even very expensive, and you prevent all that loss of time and causes of stress.

And not only do you know you have a straight frame, but you also know you’ve got one WITHOUT any hidden internal rust, 50+ years of fatigue, unknown quality repair work, etc, etc.
Yes, the same things have gone through my mind. Sales person at Andover told me last year I would be better off getting my original frame repaired. No reason given at the time. New frames there are now out of stock as they change suppliers. Thanks for your response.

Doesn’t sound like a very good salesperson does it!

Good hunting James.

So what's the difference in the Mk 3 frames?
The Seat mounts?
The Mk 2 seat will slip onto the shock mounts.
I personally didn't like the hinged seat when I had Mk 3. I used an earlier slip off.

Handing off to the experts here. Any reason why a Mk 3 frame won't work?

I don't know if this of interest, but I had seen the ad while using searchtempest.com today.
