Hey again all,
Forgive my questions but I am still stuck in Egypt until July....
Well, I am a new owner of a (according to Norvil's website) a 1973 Mark I 850 HiRider Interstate. The engine and frame numbers are: 302714

Forgive my Norton Ignorance here but I dont think Norton made a HiRider Interstate correct? It is EITHER a HiRider OR an Interstate correct?

Anyway, had the old man pay my $800 to the guy. What I got was a complete Commando Interstate/HiRider 850 with free motor and excellent compression. It needs a bit of refurbishing and cleaning but I am betting she will run (after the Amals are gone though). It has high bars on it but I am not sure about the seat. My old man is sending me pictures so when I get them I will post them and maybe you guys can help me identify it.

Don't think I went too wrong for $800???

Correct, its either one or the other, hi rider has small tank and huge seat and high bars. Interstate has large 5 gal tank and normal seat and the factory fitted low bars. Both can be converted to and from each other easily as long as you have the parts.

http://www.nortonownersclub.org/models/commando has some details and examples of both variations

$800 is a good price for any Commando let alone one close to running, on ebay uk a frame alone went recently for £1100, this was because it was pre Jan 73 and could get free roadtax. Look at the red plate on the front of the frame headstock and see what the man date stamp is. 73 Model year 850's were made from late 72 onwards and yours is an early number.

Unless the head and lower end are trashed, and the frame is bent, and the wheel hubs are ruined, and the wiring harness is burned to a crisp, and the instruments are smashed, and the fork lowers are cracked open, and the the fenders are chopped and drilled, and the alternator and carbs are totally shot, you got a GREAT deal.

NO! Not necessarily, the information contained in the Norvil list is somewhat incomplete, and therefore can be misleading, and NORVIL REALLY SHOULD KNOW BETTER!.

It completely misses off the 850 MkI Roadster model for 73, of which there were several thousand made, and that certainly isn't the only omission in the list.

So it could have been either an 850 MkI ROADSTER, INTERSTATE or Hi-RIDER model, originally?
