Who has got the highest mileage non rebuilt Commando here ?
I don't mean with replaced rings , timing /primary chain etc but the highest mileage without the original engine removed, stripped and rebuilt through wear and use .

The late Gerry Bristow RIP in Crete had a Mk 3 which I think was quoted at about 85,000 miles on it,
with just normal maintenance. He credited this, as an ex-oil industry exec, mostly to using synthetic oil in it.
Specifically Mobil 1 15W/50.

Several folks here and on the Norton chat lists have more miles, some a lot more,
but I wouldn't swear that they haven't been re-ringed or rebuilt at some stage.

Having seen the rings that have come out of assorted high mileage bikes,
I wouldn't like to push them too far, the chances of a catastrophe looked to be not too far ahead. !
And they are considered as consumables, and quite inexpensive - although involved to fit.
Valve guides also don't last forever, and oil burning just isn't cool....

A buddy in the club here has a MK3 with 112,000 on it, never been opened up beyond having the head off.
It was his regular commuter vehicle for years.

I have 79,239 on my 1973 850. Most by the PO who I'm told road it up & down the California coast a lot. I don't know about the bottom end but was told by the late great "Bib" Bill Bibbiani that the top end & rings were done just before I got it. The PO did do a lot of the basic upgrades & it was well maintained but not in great cosmetic or original shape, the motor was & is still very strong & at the time I wanted one to play with to help heal my then ailing mind, body & soul. ( new bikes are great therapy for failed relationships ) I've done tons of stuff from wheels/bearings to wiring and It's certainly been stress tested chasing a friend & X racer all over the mountains of So Cal fast & hard so I kind of doubt the bottom end is all original but I have no way of contacting the PO who left the U.S. for somewhere in Asia. If I ever do need to have the Speedo worked on I will insist they do not reset the clock!!! Glenn T.S.
