From what I have been able to discern from period road test photos and sales brochures, the early P11 had the indicator light mounted in the headlight shell behind the ammeter. Some photos of P11A's and all the Ranger 750 photos show the indicator light to the left of the ammeter. Apparently this was changed at some point during the production of the P11A?

The part number (033166) is the same in the parts books for P11 and P11A thru '68 (for what that's worth).

Can anyone confirm these observations?

Hi Ron.
Mine A has the light on the left.
As far as i know, only N15 and G15, like Atlas, have the light rear the ammeter.

My early P11 has no headlight, so I looked at my Ranger, only to find that, while the correct Lucas bucket, it had no high beam light. That did not surprise me as it also does not have the correct headlight mounts. Intending to drill one for the P11 and one for the Ranger, I started looking for the correct position.

I believe this is BillT's Ranger 750

P400's High Pipe P11.

This may be one of those cases where they used what ever bucket was in the bin, but I believe I see a pattern of transition from the rear mounted light to the side mounted light.

The problem with the light on the left is it is partially blocked by the speedometer. Left is correct, but mine is in the same position as the P11/P11A.

My early bike (67) has it to the left, my late bike (68) has it in the center.

Are the lenses supposed to be prism or flat?

I see replacement ones are available which is good as mine is broken. Do the wires and socket separate from the plastic holder?

Prism lens. If your question about removable sockets pertains to originals, the answer is yes, the socket is removable.

Mine looks like this. Wires coming directly out. No spade connections.

these are available new as a complete light assembly with bulb, from dozens of suppliers.

you will have to add spade connections to your wires, probably ebay can supply those as well.

looks like all you need is the 38189 light housing and that is what you purchased, plus now that I looked at your headlite photo, it looks as if 38189 was supplied as pre wired with bullet connectors (what you have) or flag connectors (more common now)..............and the reason for pre wired might be to clear headlite components within the shell.

just to digress slightly as were in a similar location on the bike , what is the correct cable routing ? ie brake and clutch ? ive seen cables going through the speedo/tacho bracket and others going behind the headlamp ?

cheers

Period motorcycle magazine tests show the cables routed between the instrument mount and the top tree.
