Is this the way that these hinges were presented from the factory. Did they have a "cover" or something to rid the agricultural look about it.. Was a good idea in principle but not executed very well at all.

Has anybody been able to improve it appearence??

Hi
The screws are inserted from the inside, not the outside.
There is a rubber cover strip. It mounts into a threaded plate that the screws attach to, which I cannot tell if you have incorrectly mounted on the inside, or it is just missing.

These pics may help (if they work).

Aahhh.. Ok Yes the 4 screws go into a "plate" which i can redo other way round.. The "plate" with 4 threaded hole in it, is it supposed to have Rubber stripped "glued" to it ??? If so, from your photo i can just reverse the screws and plate and clue a rubber flap onto it :D :D :D :D

Not glued, the plate also has some stepped holes (as well as threaded) in it, and the flap has some shouldered nibs that "clip" into the holes. I install the cover strip onto the plate before installing the plate onto the bike.
These holes usually have the old cover strip broken off rubber tips stuck in them. Poke them out and you will see the shouldered design. You definitely need the genuine strip.
You really need to check the parts page that was linked, as there is also a spacer plate required.
I have all the genuine hinge parts on hand usually if that helps.

Ive swapped around as per my pic and there is a spacer plate on the bottom half of hinge which ATM does "nothing". Yes i did see "old rubber plugs" within those hole (which i have long wondered what there for) Now i know... I will look up NorCom!!!

Best way to improve the hinged appearance is to bin it. I converted my Mk3 seat fixings to the earlier un-hinged. Much better arrangement.

Thats probably is the best idea and agree, cos ive misplace the retaining cable is all crapppy and horrid... But if i replace the hinge with a "tongue" as per other side i will need to spot weld or drill holes, grrrrrrrrrrr not a good thought since new seat cover... If i had a "spare" seat base/frame as a donor i wouldn't hesitate.. I'm waiting for the "shed fairies" to return the limit cable, then i may feel comfortable with it all.... The hinged seat is really a pisspoor "improvement" and change for the sake of change, but thats part of the Norton experience.......................................

I converted both of my Mk 111 seats with home made brackets, pop riveted onto the base. It shouldn't affect your seat cover.

The hinged seat facilitates locking of the seat. An early seat can always be fitted.
