Today will probably be the day I do it. I am about to put down $1000 for a new 2015/2016 Sport. I consider this a very informed decision based on the collective knowledge I've gained from this forum. I won't pull out my credit card for another couple of hours yet, so if anyone cares to talk me out of it go ahead and try!

From what i understand the 961 Sport will come standard with conventional forks and a solo seat. Beyond that i am ordering the SBT DT exhaust for certain. I like what I've been reading about the re-map. I have yet to decide on either the carbon wheels or just black alloy rims. I will only be able to justify the carbon wheels if I sell one of the bikes I currently own.

Oh yeah, I am ordering through MCC Motorcycles in Chicago because they've been so damn helpful via e-mail and phone. Sure, it would be so much closer to order through Gold Coast, but they were more interested in unloading their current inventory and not nearly as accommodating.

Looking forward to any and all input!

Peter

DO IT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Also, talk to g81 can cycle (John) about the exhaust before you order it.

Okay, I will. I won't place a specific order today. Gonna wait til I know a few more things.

Hello Richard , Are you referring to The Norton Motad exhaust system versus buying the SBN system ? The only caveat is he needs to call England to get them . I assume he lives here in North America , oh yes in VT. That's what I did and happy with them. The sound is very good the mufflers are light. These are the short opens I have, like you Richard but w/o cats.. G81 has experience with both systems and give the best opinion.

I definitely prefer the look of the SBT system. These offer better performance and sound than the stock pipes, right?

Yes, but TonyA is correct.
G81 (John) has 2 961s. One with SBT exhaust, another with the Motad Shortie.
He can give you a good idea of the different sound.

I like the sound of the shorties over the SBT, that is pretty subjective. But they are a little louder and a deeper "growl".

Both systems are very well made (although I think the Motads are a little better) Some of the welds on the SBT are single pass, when I think they should be two passes. I think DBono had his SB pipes fail at one of the welds that concerns me on the silencer. They were warrantied by South Bay, but they did fail.

Additionally the stock pipes with cats have a hanger under the bike. This hanger supports the weight of the header pipes and cats. Then there is a sliding mount tube for the silencers. Motad builds the stock pipes (I think this is true but not sure), and the shorties and the Decatt X pipe have this same mechanical feature (the hanger) The SB pipes do not have this hanger, so the weight of the system is carried by the pipe at the head flange, and the fixed (not sliding ) mount on the silencers.

Cone Inc makes the SB pipes, and they do good work, but my opinion is the Motad shorties are a better product, both in sound and quality.

I purchased mine through Krazy Horse in London (as did TonyA, I believe) Great guys to deal with, and the shortoes were $100 cheaper when I bought them (I paid $1800 for the SB pipes and $1700 for the Motads) Either Tony or I can give you contact info for Krazy Horse. Calling them gets better response than email

I had a weld failure on my SBN Dominator silencer. Right were the hanger bracket is joined to the silencer. Obvious poor weld penetration.
SBN took the pipe back and corrected the failure. They paid for the shipping, as they should have.
Silencer came back polished looking like new. No problems since.

Yes, I too had a weld failure with the SBN exhaust. It was fixed and returned, but not done particularly well. So, they took it back again and replaced it with their new generation, which appears to have a better finish where the muffler connects to the thinner diameter pipe. The new version also has adjustable channels for flexible mounting.

I was not pleased with the first generation, but this next gen is much better. Still, not sure whether I'd go SBN again or opt for the Motad short opens. One potential benefit is that the new Norton maps I believe are intended for the Motads. May not be a significant difference in mapping to the SBN system, but that's unclear at this stage. I also think that the Motads feel closer to an original Norton part, so some benefit there too, at least for me. On balance, think I'd go for the Motads.

Actually they're in Bury St(Saint) Edmunds, which is a town 70+ miles outside of London-just in case anyone was thinking of dropping in on them during a visit to London. :)

Thanks LAB

I actually would like to visit Donnington Hall and Krazy Horse this fall. I appreciate the UK geography lessson

Thanks much for the scoop on these after-market pipes. I might be back to square one on a decision now, however. How boring are the stock pipes, anyway?

Very boring. Especially when the bike is new. All you hear is a tin full of rocks being shaken. The engine is quite noisy until a proper break in is completed. When I mean boring, I mean disgustingly so. A stock Bonneville sounds better.

That does sound boring! Okay, I figured as much. Other than the SBN product mentioned is there is anything else out there with long pipes?
