Help with replacing MK II airbox with earlier oval air clean

When I bought my 1975 Mk III, it came with a Mikuni VM36. I have replaced with Amal (932s. The old airbox was cut to pieces in order to get clearance for the Mikuni. I would like to mount one of the oval air cleaners from earlier years, as I see some have done. I don't know how to adapt the old air cleaner to my bike. If anyone has done this and is willing to share pictures of the result/outcome, I would appreciate it.

"I riveted in two aircraft type nut plates."

Nice rivet job using two of the old style fibre insert type lock nuts, a real blast from the past those nuts are!

Yessiree those are the old style nut plates. I am surprised anyone even noticed. I used to work for an aircraft museum with it's maintenance facility in Mojave,CA. I mainly did aircraft structural repair and restoration. Those nut plates just happened to be what was in the stock room at that time.

I have since fabricated my own custom battery tray from 2024 T3 aluminum alloy. It now uses the more modern all metal type nut plates.

Appreciate the response. As Clint Eastwood said, "A good man always knows his limitations." I know mine, and I don't think this is going to happen. An old friend and racer is sending me his MKIII airbox, and I will remount the original mufflers and ride with less brio. I do like the looks of the earlier air cleaner arrangement much better, but I think it ain't to be.
