I tried one, and so did other Commando friends, we all agree the exciting
to read hype ya up ad below is not BS. Strong center hi beam, good to about
200 yrd to see markings on deer, broad low sharp cut off flood spread
chopped on LH traffic side but sloped upward on RH side to light
up shoulder and deer lurking further up into tree line.
Past Peel had 165 watts of forward beams, but not much better
than one good H4 halogen bulb we all know. This one tops
even my cars head lights.

Another Harley market trickle down item for my special.

Got mine from J & P Cycle
http://www.jpcycles.com/

Does the J&P version have the blue inner coating ect? Just trying to figure out why its almost twice the price right from Candlepower. It is the exact same light correct?

All I did was chuck a xenon type Sylvania (Nighthawk??) bulb in my plain old, but new reflector. It is much brighter than then a regular H4 version since I did a comparasin test. I'd be into the Candlepower version if it is indeed even better than the current setup I have.

The one I got from J & P Cycle has a slight blue tint to the faceted
reflector. If you call J/P tech they can tell ya what is what.

On head lamps like factory Norton that aren't sealed beams
I use what you do, and hope filament sit at the proper focal point.

Ms Peel will have 2 head lights one behind the other.
7" Candlepower Xenon in the fairing and 5.3/4" in the fork
ears. A few wing nuts will allow removal of big fairing
to leave the smaller light for the cafe naked look.

Looking for some Very Narrow Pencil beam lights, 4" diameter
but don't want to spend $200+. Open to suggestions, high wattage
is no problem.

I'm all for best light possible. I found a nice motorized HID system for 7" bucket, but it was $440 so had to pass lol

Almost all HID lights are low bean only as they take too long to
light up on first switching. Some off road lights are HID as
nil need to dip em for oncoming eyes. Let us know how
they work out please.

They are almost as cheap as hi end sealed beams nowadays.
I'm not going to buy any regardless.

A subject near and dear to my heart.

I've long preferred Raybrig H4 bulbs, but recently (yesterday) put in an order for some Philips "Vision Plus" bulbs (a "plus 50" type of bulb) having, through extensive research (i.e., reading online forums and blogs of various makes and models of car and bike owners), become convinced that it's the (or among the) hot ticket these days. Who knows? What I read convinced me to give them a try.

Nothing wrong with the Raybrigs, except they're pricey.

I'm not sure I'd chance it Dave (although I'm not sure what the stocker put out - 180W?) I run a Sparx three-phase, no issues with that.

Thanks for letting us in on your H4 bulb leg work.
I'll file for future try out.

Swooh, [nice sound ], Yes and No on any light on any Commando,
even with biggest battery.
The most vital device to solve dead battery is a voltage meter
but the LED kind, which take nil focus to monitor.
Arch band of colored LEDs, or
to replace the useless assimulator lamp in head light shell,
get the single Color change LED under the Osborne name.

Then just keep rev's so LED's mostly in the green.
Ignition takes about 5 watts max, tail light-15 ?, brake 20 ?,
So less than 40 watts w/o headlight which adds say 65
hi beam, <~110 watts, to push that to 12+ volts takes 18-2000. rpm.

I am doing the "small-battery-thought-thing" also, I will be running:

Dual output coil (CNW),
Tri Spark,
H4 headlight (5 3/4"),
Delco horns (2),
LED brake/tail light (a Miller replica "stop" with the BCS LED kit),
LED Instrument bulbs (2),
LED license plate lights (4, they are in the bolts),
LED high beam indicator (single LED).

I have a NOS Wassell 120W alternator, a Tympanium SS unit, I will be running a custom harness (16G) with the ABSOLUTE minimum wire in it, a 2 position boat ignition switch (headlight on with the ignition) and Pingel Switchgear. I'm looking at a UPS battery in 9AH but because of space-concerns I would LOVE to run something smaller if I could.

With 16G wire should I run relays?

Unclviny,

I ran Ms Peel with 1.4 ah battery about the size of two cigarette
packs and just a few lbs. i found the sealed gel cell used in
home alarms or ham radio. IIRC Safe Battery was where i
found mine online. Newest is the fiber mat lead acid.

With electronic ignition ya need a battery to reliably kick start
as can take a roll out to near 20 mph to spin alternator to 11v.
But ya don't need much of one and easy to stash - room to spare.

You can' t low ilde 5 min on 1.2 ah battery before sputers dead.

But 6- 8 lb less mass can be felt, same as lost of the center stand.

Good selection here of pretty small batteries.

What's the lowest ah battery that is practical? From hobot's comment I'd say 1.2 ah is not enough.

Once running ya don't need a battery as long as not just sitting at idle,
must blip some to keep fire going. The blue can capacitor helps
smooth extend current dips at low rpm, actually acts like a short time storage
battery and is wired as if it was.
In a city I'd stick in at least 2.4 ah or more.
In rural area like me, 1.2 ah is plenty and use it in ctiy fine as
long as just keeping engine blip up over idle if sitting more
than a minute or two.

Point systems pretty easy to start sans battery, often better
if battery so dead its a drag.

I think this is the biggest battery I'll be able to fit with my ignition switch and fuse panel in the way.

Dimensions: 4 1/2" L x 2 13/16" W x 5 3/16" H
Polarity: [- +]
Actual Weight (lb.): 6.2
Shipping Weight (lb.): 7
DC Output Voltage: 12 V
Amp/Hr: 6
C.C.A.: 90

I am hoping that I can run the Powersonic 5AH, it's smaller and lighter than the battery pictured above.

I will be asking about a Zillion dumb-questions about this harness/wiring job. You know the Electrical-Idiots? I'm on their stamps!

Be sure to read all my dumb questions first so you don't repeat them.
